Karen,
    Just received a copy from NCTE of the notice that they sent you of =
your recognition as one of nine State, Regional, and Provincial Award =
winners of the NCTE/SLATE Intellectual Freedom Award.  As your =
colleagues made so clear, your courage and tenacity make you an =
extraordinary exemplar of the pursuit of intellectual freedom. =20
    Allow me to add my commendations--I'm so glad the Executive =
Committee of the Colorado Language Arts Society voted unanimously to =
nominate you for the award.  The main part of the application is =
attached here.
    Also, let me thank your colleagues who gave vivid details of the  =
many ways that you do indeed help students and teachers to "open our =
hearts to something larger than ourselves."  Those colleagues were =
Shelly O'Rourke (who gave me an overview that led me to connect with =
teachers in your building), Sheila Kaehny, Josh Williams, David =
Weisbart, and CLAS board members Alan Olds and Sarah Tongue.
    You will be honored and the nominating materials will be displayed  =
at the NCTE Annual Convention in Atlanta, Georgia.  I'm hoping many of =
us will be present when you are presented an award certificate at the =
affiliate breakfast Sunday, November 24 at 7:30 a.m.
    Again, all of us in CLAS are so proud of your exemplary work.
