All,
Thought you might be interested in the narrative that is =
accompanying the report I'm mailing this week to NCTE as part of the =
CLAS application for a 2002 Affiliate Excellence Award. The notebook =
itself includes documentation (not reproduced here) of our past year =
together in CLAS. As I reread the application and the President's =
Report presented at our annual business meeting, I am awed by the work =
that these gifted and dedicated educators (YOU!) have achieved on behalf =
of language arts students and teachers in Colorado. Perhaps this record =
might help us in our continued planning and projects, so it is attached, =
and (for those of you who are leery of attachments), it is printed out =
below. You will be gratified to know that even though this isn't my =
final version, I will NOT be sending you rewrites. However, if you spot =
errors and omissions, I would appreciate receiving them--so that this =
document can be as useful and accurate an archive as possible.
Thank you each and every one for your service, professionalism, =
collegiality, grace, and humor in the past year. I am also grateful for =
your remarks and written words presented to me at our May Executive =
Board meeting. I thought I would have to die before persons would pen =
such eloquent and moving words about my efforts, but I should have known =
better since I know the grace and gifts that each of you bestow so =
freely on language arts colleagues and students. Best wishes to each of =
you as you continue to be a part of a dynamic professional organization =
with a rich heritage and the promise of a great year under the =
leadership of Dianne Sievers.

=20

Section 2: Documentation=20
=20

Tab on the following subsection as well as the number below corresponds =
to the numbered category on the application form.

=20

2. Publish a different form of communications instrument IN ADDITION TO =
the communications instrument in REQUIRED activity #2 [section I]. =20

=20

a. Newly-inaugurated CLAS listserv (server is FreeLists =
www.freelists.org/signup.html).=20

Administrator of CLAS listserv has been CLAS member Monica Hansen. =
This new form of communication is open to all CLAS members and has been =
used to post information of upcoming events, to request information =
about curriculum, to converse about ways to boost CLAS membership, and =
to inform one another about our professional and personal triumphs and =
to call for or offer support related to both our professional and =
personal challenges. See printouts of some of the communications.

=20

b. CLAS web pages: see the following section including print-outs of =
home page (as updated on 10/28/01 and as updated on 12/18/01), printout =
of one of the links, and also see web site:=20

http://clem.mscd.edu/~clas

=20

c. Statement, the Journal of the Colorado Language Arts Society: =
Student Writing Contest Winners, Vol. 38, No. 2, Winter 2002.

Our newly-appointed editor abruptly resigned from her post in late =
December, and at its January meeting this year the Executive Committee =
unanimously voted to name Jon Larson as Editor. He is continuing the =
fine tradition established by our previous long-time editor Louann Reid, =
now a CLAS Executive Committee Ex-Officio member. =20

Because of the need for immediate publication of our Winter issue =
to correspond with an awards presentation at our Regional Spring =
Conference, Jon published Statement in an attractively-formatted unbound =
edition collected in blue pocket folders and distributed to CLAS members =
as well as to student winners. =20

See blue folder in back of this notebook.

 =20

3. Develop or continue a program or activity which encourages new =
and/or future teachers in the language arts profession.

=20

The Judith Gilbert Fellowship for CLAS Leaders. The award, =
named after an eminent CLAS "foremother" and educator, perpetuates the =
spirit of leadership and professionalism that Judith Gilbert embodied. =
It enables a current CLAS leader to mentor a promising newcomer.=20

The Colorado Writing Project provides funding for both a mentor and an =
intern to receive CLAS memberships for one year as well as paid =
registrations to two CLAS events-Fall Writing Conference, Virginia =
Westerberg Children's Literature Conference, or Regional Spring =
Conference-in 2002-2003. The award, announced at the Regional Spring =
Conference, was presented to mentor Jon Larson and intern Monica Hansen.

=20

6. As an affiliate, nominate at least one member of the affiliate for =
an NCTE office or nominating committee.

The CLAS Executive Committee distributed a flyer designed by =
a CLAS member and calling for nominations for the NCTE Secondary Section =
ballot; the board sought out qualified candidates. CLAS member Stevi =
Quate was nominated and made the ballot for the Secondary Section =
Steering Committee. CLAS President Carol Sullivan was a member of the =
Secondary Section Nominating Committee.

=20

 =20

7. Participate in SLATE and/or legislative and/or non-partisan policy =
making activities during the year.

            a. Joyce Meskis, a Denver bookseller and owner of The =
Tattered Cover, received the 2001 National NCTE Intellectual Freedom =
Award. At the opening banquet of the NCTE convention in Baltimore, the =
CLAS president read Joyce Meskis's letter of acceptance. See attached =
copy.

            b. An essay on intellectual freedom and a profile of Joyce =
Meskis were published in The Denver Post; the author was identified as =
the author of the nomination for the NCTE Intellectual Freedom Award and =
as president of the Colorado Language Arts Society. See attached copy =
of articles, which appeared on page one of Perspective section of The =
Denver Post, 9/2/01 and also in SLATE newsletter.

            c. Bill McBride and Paula Hodges, CLAS ex-officio members =
of the Executive Committee, co-chaired a post-conference session in =
Baltimore on "Working with Legislators and Other Policy-Makers." See =
page 234 of convention program.

=20

=20

9. Apply to at least one awards program sponsored by SCOA and/or SLATE: =
e.g. Affiliate Multicultural Award, NCTE Fund Teachers for the Dream =
Award, Affiliate Newsletter Award, Affiliate Journal Award, NCTE/SLATE =
Intellectual Freedom Award (National and/or State, Regional, and =
Provincial).

            a. Karen Hartman was nominated for a 2002 NCTE/SLATE =
Intellectual Freedom Award and the State, Regional, and Provincial =
level. See following pages for copy of application.

            b. CLAS Currents newsletter was nominated for Affiliate =
Newsletter Award. See Section 1, #2 for copies of the newsletter from =
2001-2002.

            c. Nominated by CLAS the previous year for the NCTE and =
Prentice Hall-Pearson Education Award/NCTE Leadership Development Award, =
Jennifer Murrrin-Loomis was present at the affiliate breakfast to be =
acknowledged for the award.

=20

=20

10. Develop and carry out a program or activity which directly involves =
members of the local community in language arts activities.

            a. The Elementary Storytelling Contest involved seven =
schools from primary grades and seven schools from intermediate grades =
across the state, as well as a group known as the Jefferson Count =
Spellbinders, senior citizens who volunteer their time to tell stories =
in elementary schools. The contest, open to primary and middle school =
students, was judged by the Spellbinders and yielded four winners.=20

The Spellbinders brought a "knowledge of storytelling coupled with their =
love and children," as the CLAS contest organizers reported. =
Spellbinders and CLAS members then hosted a storytelling session =
involving contest winners, and the Spellbinders performed at their own =
session at CLAS's Virginia Westerberg Children's Literature Conference =
on October 27, 2001. Prospective contestants and their teachers were =
given tips at the literature conference for successful storytelling, =
including the advice that teachers help students find a story they love =
and can "live with" for awhile as they learn to tell a particular story. =
Storytellers were also coached on ways to achieve fluency and clarity.

The four winners from primary and intermediate grades were =
awarded a $25 check, a certificate, and a luncheon at the Westerberg =
Conference. Schools for one winner at both the primary and intermediate =
levels were also awarded a story-telling session and workshop. The =
Spellbinders performed and taught at one workshop, and CLAS board member =
Ed Low presided at another workshop. See the following annual report.

=20

          b. A Celebration of Writers and Writing drew student winners =
of CLAS and NCTE-sponsored writing contests as well as their parents and =
families to a reading and reception at the CLAS Regional Spring =
Conference at the Broadmoor. Students were presented with certificates, =
plaques, and other honoraria associated with their particular awards. =
Students, their parents, and CLAS members sat at round tables and =
visited with one another about writing before the ceremony. Lorri =
Hewett and Bill Strong, conference keynoters, spoke about the writing =
process. The climax of the event came as CLAS members read excerpts =
from each student's writing, and the student authors were introduced and =
applauded.

Co-sponsors of various award recognitions included the Colorado =
Writing Project, Heather Wolf and Holt, Rinehart, and Winston.

See the following for the printed program as well as for various CLAS =
publications which reproduced the students' works and announced various =
contests. All the award-winning student writing was published in a =
special edition of Statement (found at the end of this notebook).

=20

=20

PARTICIPATION IN AFFILIATE-SPONSORED ACTIVITIES (item #5, section II, =
three sessions required) at the NCTE-Baltimore convention in Baltimore.=20

CLAS members were active in many other NCTE leadership roles, and =
attended two of the affiliate-sponsored activities: =20

=B7 Affiliate Roundtable Breakfast on Friday, November 16, 2001 =
(p. 120 of convention program), attended by Denise Campbell, Bill =
McBride, Jackie Swensson, Jennifer Murrin-Loomis, Carol Sullivan, and =
others. See attached program.

=B7 Affiliate Representative Meeting on Membership (p. 108 of =
convention program), attended by Jackie Swensson and Carol Sullivan.

Other NCTE leadership roles by CLAS members included: =20

=B7 Dave Wendelin, Secondary Section Chair; NCTE Executive =
Committee

=B7 Willa Mae Kippes, CEL Executive Committee; Secondary Section =
Committee

=B7 Louann Reid, CEL Executive Committee (then chair)

=B7 Carol Sullivan, Secondary Section Nominating Committee

=B7 Bill McBride and Paula Hodges, Co-chairs of SLATE =
post-conference workshop

=B7 Brannon Hertel, Hospitality Chair for CEL Conference

=20

=20

CREATION OF AN AFFILIATE STRATEGIC PLAN (item #11, section II).

The CLAS Executive Committee met at an overnight retreat in August of =
2001 and began constructing the framework for a strategic plan. Theme =
of the retreat was "Breathing Lessons: personal, professional, =
organization reflection and renewal." Dan and Dawn Kirby oriented the =
proceedings by asking us to explore Parker Palmer's "self that teaches," =
as well as ways to integrate inner and outer landscapes/selves. The =
board crafted three CLAS goals:

=B7 Increase membership and membership services

=B7 Improve financial stability and accountability

=B7 Enhance leadership in the language arts

=20

During the year, in furtherance of those goals, the board:

=B7 Created three task forces corresponding to each of the three =
goals

=B7 Authorized a Finance Committee with a specific charter=20

=B7 Created and implemented the Judith Gilbert Fellowship for =
CLAS Leaders

=B7 Created a listserv for electronic postings about CLAS and =
about the language arts

=B7 Authorized a postcard mailing to all members to remind them =
of upcoming opportunities in CLAS and to notify them of their membership =
renewal date

=B7 Authorized payment via credit card for the 2003 Regional =
Spring Conference and for membership renewals if they occur at the time =
of registration for the conference.

=B7 Discussed the benefits of crafting an annual budget. We =
presently have monthly and annual financial reports but no prospective =
budget.=20

=B7 Authorized the annual Dan Kirby Instructional Grant and =
voted to fund it for $200, a grant whose first recipient is to be =
announced at the 2003 Regional Spring Conference. Teachers will be =
asked to write up proposals for instructional uses, pilot programs, =
materials, and the like. The idea for such mini-grants comes from 2001 =
Colorado Teacher of the Year Joan Kniss. An elected CLAS =
Member-at-Large, Joan was named to chair a committee to implement the =
award.
