The notebook = itself includes documentation (not reproduced here) of our past year = together in CLAS. As I reread the application and the President's = Report presented at our annual business meeting, I am awed by the work = that these gifted and dedicated educators (YOU!) have achieved on behalf = of language arts students and teachers in Colorado. Perhaps this record = might help us in our continued planning and projects, so it is attached, = and (for those of you who are leery of attachments), it is printed out = below. You will be gratified to know that even though this isn't my = final version, I will NOT be sending you rewrites. However, if you spot = errors and omissions, I would appreciate receiving them--so that this = document can be as useful and accurate an archive as possible. Thank you each and every one for your service, professionalism, = collegiality, grace, and humor in the past year. I am also grateful for = your remarks and written words presented to me at our May Executive = Board meeting. I thought I would have to die before persons would pen = such eloquent and moving words about my efforts, but I should have known = better since I know the grace and gifts that each of you bestow so = freely on language arts colleagues and students. Develop and carry out a program or activity which directly involves = members of the local community in language arts activities. a. The Elementary Storytelling Contest involved seven = schools from primary grades and seven schools from intermediate grades = across the state, as well as a group known as the Jefferson Count = Spellbinders, senior citizens who volunteer their time to tell stories = in elementary schools. The contest, open to primary and middle school = students, was judged by the Spellbinders and yielded four winners.=20 The Spellbinders brought a "knowledge of storytelling coupled with their = love and children," as the CLAS contest organizers reported. = Spellbinders and CLAS members then hosted a storytelling session = involving contest winners, and the Spellbinders performed at their own = session at CLAS's Virginia Westerberg Children's Literature Conference = on October 27, 2001. Prospective contestants and their teachers were = given tips at the literature conference for successful storytelling, = including the advice that teachers help students find a story they love = and can "live with" for awhile as they learn to tell a particular story. = Storytellers were also coached on ways to achieve fluency and clarity. The four winners from primary and intermediate grades were = awarded a $25 check, a certificate, and a luncheon at the Westerberg = Conference. Schools for one winner at both the primary and intermediate = levels were also awarded a story-telling session and workshop. The = Spellbinders performed and taught at one workshop, and CLAS board member = Ed Low presided at another workshop. See the following annual report. =20 b. A Celebration of Writers and Writing drew student winners = of CLAS and NCTE-sponsored writing contests as well as their parents and = families to a reading and reception at the CLAS Regional Spring = Conference at the Broadmoor. Students were presented with certificates, = plaques, and other honoraria associated with their particular awards. = Students, their parents, and CLAS members sat at round tables and = visited with one another about writing before the ceremony. Lorri = Hewett and Bill Strong, conference keynoters, spoke about the writing = process. The climax of the event came as CLAS members read excerpts = from each student's writing, and the student authors were introduced and = applauded. Co-sponsors of various award recognitions included the Colorado = Writing Project, Heather Wolf and Holt, Rinehart, and Winston. See the following for the printed program as well as for various CLAS = publications which reproduced the students' works and announced various = contests. All the award-winning student writing was published in a = special edition of Statement (found at the end of this notebook). =20 =20 =20 PARTICIPATION IN AFFILIATE-SPONSORED ACTIVITIES (item #5, section II, = three sessions required) at the NCTE-Baltimore convention in Baltimore.=20 CLAS members were active in many other NCTE leadership roles, and = attended two of the affiliate-sponsored activities: =20 =B7 Affiliate Roundtable Breakfast on Friday, November 16, 2001 = (p. 120 of convention program), attended by Denise Campbell, Bill = McBride, Jackie Swensson, Jennifer Murrin-Loomis, Carol Sullivan, and = others. Other NCTE leadership roles by CLAS members included: =20 =B7 Dave Wendelin, Secondary Section Chair; NCTE Executive = Committee =B7 Willa Mae Kippes, CEL Executive Committee; Secondary Section = Committee =B7 Louann Reid, CEL Executive Committee (then chair) =B7 Carol Sullivan, Secondary Section Nominating Committee =B7 Bill McBride and Paula Hodges, Co-chairs of SLATE = post-conference workshop =B7 Brannon Hertel, Hospitality Chair for CEL Conference =20 =20 CREATION OF AN AFFILIATE STRATEGIC PLAN (item #11, section II). The CLAS Executive Committee met at an overnight retreat in August of = 2001 and began constructing the framework for a strategic plan. Theme = of the retreat was "Breathing Lessons: personal, professional, = organization reflection and renewal." Dan and Dawn Kirby oriented the = proceedings by asking us to explore Parker Palmer's "self that teaches," = as well as ways to integrate inner and outer landscapes/selves. The = board crafted three CLAS goals: =B7 Increase membership and membership services =B7 Improve financial stability and accountability =B7 Enhance leadership in the language arts =20 During the year, in furtherance of those goals, the board: =B7 Created three task forces corresponding to each of the three = goals =B7 Authorized a Finance Committee with a specific charter=20 =B7 Created and implemented the Judith Gilbert Fellowship for = CLAS Leaders =B7 Created a listserv for electronic postings about CLAS and = about the language arts =B7 Authorized a postcard mailing to all members to remind them = of upcoming opportunities in CLAS and to notify them of their membership = renewal date =B7 Authorized payment via credit card for the 2003 Regional = Spring Conference and for membership renewals if they occur at the time = of registration for the conference. =B7 Discussed the benefits of crafting an annual budget. We = presently have monthly and annual financial reports but no prospective = budget.=20 =B7 Authorized the annual Dan Kirby Instructional Grant and = voted to fund it for $200, a grant whose first recipient is to be = announced at the 2003 Regional Spring Conference. Teachers will be = asked to write up proposals for instructional uses, pilot programs, = materials, and the like. The idea for such mini-grants comes from 2001 = Colorado Teacher of the Year Joan Kniss. An elected CLAS = Member-at-Large, Joan was named to chair a committee to implement the = award. =20 # ------=_NextPart_002_0012_01C21DFB.DB19E7A0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML><HEAD> <META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Diso-8859-1"> <META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2600.0" name=3DGENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=3D#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>All,</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2> Thought you might be = interested=20 in the narrative that is accompanying the report I'm mailing = this week to=20 NCTE as part of the CLAS application for a 2002 Affiliate = Excellence=20 Award.
