Apologies for cross-posting Dear colleagues,The organizers of the Sparky Awards (http://www.sparkyawards.org/) invite you to organize a local version of the Sparky Awards at your institutions.
The Sparky Awards is an international contest that recognizes the best new short videos on the value of sharing. It aims to broaden the discussion of access to scholarly research by inviting college/university students to express their views creatively. It also provides an opportunity to promote library services (such as Information Commons or media services) and to underscore that the library is a key part of everyone's learning experience. The library can be the place to edit video, browse media, work collaboratively, and learn about citations and copyright.
Last year, Brigham Young University (BYU), Dartmouth College, and Penn State University were among the institutions that organized local Sparky contests. "The experience was remarkable," said BYU University Librarian Randy Olsen. "In every case the students spoke articulately, even passionately, about open access and it was obvious that they had become conversant with all of the issues we as librarians care so much about. By the end of the evening I felt that our investment in the awards – an iTouch and two fifty dollar checks – was money well spent."
This year, local Sparky contests will be held at Brigham Young University, University of Florida, University of Houston, University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Students may submit their entries to local contests as well as to the international Sparky Awards.
