Greetings all,
This is mainly to pick up on conversation of last Thursday. I had to leave
early, but have been scanning the film list. I am a big fan of Icelandic films
in general. Recently the Square screened "Woman at War" A serious gas! (And you
know how THAT feels). Years ago there was a film about a Japanese man returning
to Iceland to honor his parents who had died there as tourists (!!) And
another, one of my absolute favorites, is "Children of Nature", which I suggest
for consideration as an old film "classic' or whatever for the upcoming season.
(And ideally we would also screen "Wings of Desire" on the previous program. If
you've seen the Icelandic film, you'll know why I say that. They're nutso up
there. I love it).
Now I see that "The Seer and the Unseen" is on the list. I tried to find a
trailer but failed. I'll vote for it anyway, as the write ups are impressive.
It sounds as though it would line up nicely with "Anthropocene; The Human
Epoch" - a seemingly Elizabeth Kolbert, McKibben and Hanson view that is of the
utmost urgency. The ponderous but moving trailer was all I needed to get
cranked up. Viva dystopia awareness! Anyone for " Koyaaniqatsy" and/ or "Winged
Migration" as well? One terrifying and depressing albeit Of-Extreme-Importance
type film after another next winter? Huh, Huh?
OK. Seriously, (or less seriously?) I'll simply say that the Icelandic film
sounds like a good piece as does "Anthropocene", and they would likely
reinforce one another.
Nancy and I were in Portland Thursday for a screening of "Wilderness and
Spirit, a Mountain Called Katahdin", a film I worked on closely with Huey. It
was released in 2002 and is as relevant today as it was then, or even more so.
100 minutes. Another film we might screen. I'd do Q&A. Google "Wilderness and
Spirit film" and you can reach a good 3 minute trailer.
Just a thought. Have we decided on a date for the next meeting?
Regards to all, Abbott
