Good Monday Morning all,
Abbott here. I thought I might point out to all something that I am well
aware of, in order to explain why I frequently support the screening of
"controversial" films. (We do call ourselves "Cinema Explorations", after all).
But more to the point, I can't help remaining the person who taught many Jan
Plans at Colby in film study. My "job" then was to challange students with
difficult and creative works that they likely had never seen and usually never
even heard of. Mostly these would be "classics" of one sort or another - due to
their form, content, or both. I am far more familiar with films of the past and
so-called "experimental" films than with the vast range of current offerings. I
DO remind myself that our series needs to bring in a general audience and I DO
realize that many/most of my suggestions may not fit the bill, but I bring them
up in hopes of broadening the realm of consideration a bit. I simply want
everyone to know that I am comfortable with having my suggestions go by the
board. Nevertheless, I DO believe that "Sundays and Cybele" is NOT what some of
the current revisionary criticism seems to suggest. But so be it. Furthermore I
will NOT suggest that we bring in "Santa Sangre", even though it is arguably a
masterpiece.( When I screened it in classes I would tell the students that they
could leave if it was too much. I think they always stayed). You can get the
trailer on line. Enjoy?
Pura vida! A
