Hi, Joel--
We can be there for the screening, but as it turns out, I have to back
to Winthrop by 12:30 or so. That means we'll have to leave at around
11:45, which more or less goes along with what you have planned.
See you Tuesday!

I would hope that everyone could come to Railroad Square at *9:30 am* (as opposed to 10:00 am) on Tuesday, November 1^st so that we can screen “COMING THROUGH THE RYE” together before we have the rest of our meeting. “COMING THROUGH THE RYE” is 97 minutes long and I would hope we could wrap up our meeting around noon. Below you will find the e-mail exchanges I had with Ken earlier in the week. Among the key things in those e-mails is the information about “COMING THROUGH THE RYE” as well as the links to the trailer and website. Should you not be able to make Tuesday’s meeting there is a link with a password for you to watch the film at home. Please refrain from sharing these with others outside the committee.
You will also note that we did have some discussion about “A GUNFIGHT.” It looks like finding the current rights holder for “A GUNFIGHT” and arranging a screening might be a bit of a wild goose chase. Ken, I think, makes a fairly reasonable request that he wants us to be certain that we want to show that film before he starts chasing it. I sent out some reviews of the film in an earlier e-mail. Please take a look at those.
I haven’t heard from anyone who wants to “save” any of the films that I indicated have been reduced in font size as a precursor to being chopped off our list. If you do want us to consider one of those films, please get back to me over the next couple of days. Thanks,
Joel

Hi Joel-
Below’s access to the trailer, the website and a link to the film. I don’t know what their release plan in other media is, but I can ask if you think you might want to include it.
I have not seen A GUNFIGHT. It was distributed in the U.S. not by Universal but by Allied Artists through Paramount. Have no idea whether Paramount would have a 35 print, though I quite doubt it. I’d be willing to bet a lot that there’s no DCP as it’s a little known title with no demand. There was a DVD of it issued about 12 years ago; now out of print but you could get a copy. I don;t know if Paramount still has rights or if not who does. Again, I can pursue, but only if this is something you definitely want.
All best-
K
Film is set in New England. Currently at 86% on Rotten Tomatoes with positive reviews from the likes of the NY Times and NY Observer. Is a gem of a film.
*COMING THROUGH THE RYE* - Based on the Emmy Award-winning filmmaker’s own true story about his search for and encounters with JD Salinger (Academy Award winner Chris Cooper). 16-year-old Jamie Schwartz (Alex Wolff) wants desperately to be a worldly adolescent. Unhappy at his all-boys boarding school, his life raft is */_The Catcher in the Rye _/*and his unshakable belief that he will play Holden Caulfield on Broadway and in the movies. He adapts the novel as a play and runs away to the mountains of New Hampshire to search for Salinger, the book’s reclusive author. Along the way Jamie is picked up by a local girl, DeeDee Gorlin (Stefania Owen). Their odyssey and the events that follow are a journey into the meanings of friendship, sex, love and loss.

Thanks for getting back to me. It looks like “HARRY & SNOWMAN” has
moved up its opening on DVD to November 22^nd which probably takes
it out of contention for us.
I think we would be interested in knowing more and possibly having
a screening of “COMING THROUGH THE RYE” for our group. It looks
like a very attractive film that could work for our audience and
perhaps reach beyond our usual stalwarts. I do, however, have some
questions. The website seems to suggest a unique “independent”
distribution process, although it does seem to have a convention
distributor according to IMDb. Do you have a handle on what they
would want? It is now available through Amazon for a “free
download” to “compatible devices,” but the film does not seem to
be available through Amazon Video or on DVD for more conventional
home viewing. Is that your understanding and do you have any idea
when it might go to a home viewing format? Anyway, I think we
should pursue it at this point.
Abbott came up with another classic film with Kirk Douglas. The
film he suggested is “A GUNFIGHT” (1971). There are a number of
attractive things about it. Kirk’s co-star is Johnny Cash (who
also contributed to the soundtrack) as well as having Jane
Alexander, Karen Black, and Dana Elcar in the cast. Unlike some of
our other classic film candidates, the running time is just 89
minutes. The downside is that the film was independently produced
(by an Indian tribe), Universal apparently distributed it on a
for-hire basis (according to a review I read), and the limited
number of reviews I’ve seen are pretty much mixed. Do you know
anything about it?

Still not positive, Joel, to be honest. It’s likely still a long
shot, especially since it will have download availability soon,
but I still cannot be sure. However…wondering if you’ve
considered “Coming Through the Rye”? I won;t be showing it and
it’s something that struck me as possibly of interest to you…Let
me know—I can get you info, a screening link, etc….

We were wondering whether you continue to have any plans to
book “HARRY & SNOWMAN” for Railroad Square? It could probably
do well as an opening film for our series, but you were still
weighing your options with this film even though you seemed to
be somewhat doubtful about it. Have you reached a final decision?
