Abbott here,
I just recalled that some time back we discussed showing "Downfall" (Der
Untergang) - Bruno Ganz and Hitler's last days in the bunker. Wrenching piece.
Appropriate for today's world?
I am a wine enthusiast but the trailer for SOMM 3 looked like wine
snobbery. Genesis 2.0 looks intriguing, even if the subject project could
arguably be seen as a diversion from real issues. Got a good climate change or
overpopulation flick in sight? The Egon Schiele film looks like a gloss. His
life was a sordid mess and he died at 28. But I saw only a trailer. The trailer
for "3 Faces" was a puzzler, but the filmaker has made strong stuff. "Rafiki"
seems to be about same sex love in Kenya. A lot of swaying hips in the trailer.
I dunno. I very much like the idea of including something by, or about Bergman.
My choice would be one of his films. "Seventh Seal" sort of brought him to
American eyes. Who under 50 has seen it? Two of my favoites are "The Magician"
and "The Virgin Spring". I would love to see a good print of "Sundays and
Cybele". "Rabbit Proof Fence" is a great piece, as is "Monsieur Hire". Can we
find a good print of "Jesus of Montreal"?
You know me - I am always looking in see again a favorite piece, and on the
big screen.
I'll keep looking at trailers. CHOW! A

Subject: [cinemaexp] More movies
OK, I've been at it again and found more possibilities. Some are quite
intriguing. Anyway, I suspect that this pretty well completes my survey of all
of the distributors for which I had links. While this doesn't guarantee that
there won't be any additional films, it does probably mean that there won't be
any added batches of films. See you tomorrow.
http://www.oscilloscope.net/films/ I sent out this link before and proposed ;
"THE KING" as a possibility. If we were inspired to celebrate Ingmar Bergman's
100th birthday, one option besides showing one (or more) of his films would be
to show a documentary about him. A couple docs about him were made this year.
This is one that is being distributed in the US by Oscilloscope: "SEARCHING FOR
INGMAR BERGMAN" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6210160/?ref_=nv_sr_1 Here is a ;
link to a trailer for the film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E91QEXSJ1Es ;
http://www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com/ is the distributor from whom we got "HOLY ;
AIR" last year. They do a lot of same day (or short window) theatrical and VOD
releases. " A BOY, A GIRL, A DREAM" and "SOMM 3" are just being released or
will be released soon. Both are scheduled to be released on VOD prior to our
film series beginning. The other two are scheduled to be released later this
year, but it is not clear exactly when or whether theatrical and VOD would be
in close proximity. "A BOY, A GIRL, A DREAM" looks like an interesting drama
set, intriguingly, on election night 2016.
http://www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com/a-boy-a-girl-a-dream/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6905402/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "SOMM 3" is a documentary ;
about wine-tasting. This is the director's third time addressing this subject.
http://www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com/somm-3/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7959898/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "MAPPLETHORPE" is a biopic ;
about artist Robert Mapplethorpe starring Matt Smith ("Doctor Who", "The
Crown"). I suspect our audience might find this even more transgressive than
the Egon Schiele movie. http://www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com/mapplethorpe/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1389098/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "BACK ROADS" is an ;
adaptation of a novel by Tawni Odell from maybe 20 years ago. Unfortunately,
there's no trailer nor much in the way of a traditional film review. The story
seems quite intriguing. http://www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com/back-roads/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0972544/?ref_=nv_sr_1 ;
https://screenmediafilms.net/index.php There are lots of English-language ;
narratives-some with name actors and directors. It looks like everything goes
to VOD fairly quickly-perhaps simultaneously with theatrical release If
everything actually even gets a theatrical release.
https://strandreleasing.com/ Strand Releasing has four films that I found ;
somewhat intriguing. "SICILIAN GHOST STORY" has a tweener girl searching for
her missing boyfriend or would-be boyfriend. The official US release date is
11/30/18. https://strandreleasing.com/films/sicilian-ghost-story/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5375434/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "DAUGHTER OF MINE" is a ;
family drama with a girl being torn between her adoptive mother and her birth
mother. It seems to be still showing at film festivals and the screening list
doesn't list an official US release date.
https://strandreleasing.com/films/daughter-of-mine/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7765120/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 "RAMEN SHOP" seems to ;
mix food and a search for family connection. It is currently being shown at
film festivals, but doesn't have an official theatrical release date until
3/22/19. https://strandreleasing.com/films/ramen-shop/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6720618/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 "THE CAKEMAKER" is the ;
Israeli submission for Best Foreign-language Oscar in 2019. The film showed
last March at the MJFF. It has shown a numerous film festivals and has shown
theatrically for a few months. It will be coming out on DVD on 11/6/18.
Basically, it is a love story between a German baker and an Israeli man who
then dies in an accident and then the baker establishing a relationship with
the man's widow. Usually Ken doesn't like us to pursue these Oscar submissions,
but I suspect that given where it is located in the theater to home viewing
pipeline he may not be too concerned about this one. Of course, we may not want
to deal with it since it is so readily available for the home market. I don't
remember which MJFF films played at RRSQ, was it one of those RRSQ showed?
https://strandreleasing.com/films/the-cakemaker/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4830786/?ref_=nv_sr_1 There are a handful of ;
other films that based on future release dates could be suitable, but Strand
Releasing does tend to release films that feature gay themes and sexuality. I
thought that these other films appeared to be addressing stories with a lot
higher octane sexuality than we have usually presented.
http://www.cinemaguild.com/ "En el Séptimo Día ;(On the Seventh Day)" is
about an undocumented Latino immigrant who must decide between loyalty to his
team and maintaining his job. Seems to be very well-regarded by film critics
and audience ratings. It has been out in release since June, but there's no
indication that it is soon to show up on DVD or streaming.
http://www.cinemaguild.com/theatrical/septimodia.html ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6144092/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 "Hale County This ;
Morning, This Evening" is a documentary about African-American life in Alabama.
This was released in September. It is quite highly rated by critics.
http://www.cinemaguild.com/theatrical/halecounty.html ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6634646/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ;
http://vitagraphfilms.com/ This is a little distributor for which most of its ;
films are fairly old. And then there is this one that was a fairly hot ticket
in Toronto: http://museothefilm.com/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4958448/?ref_=nv_sr_1 It stars Gael Garcia Bernal ;
and is about a big-time Museum heist in Mexico.
http://www.outsiderpictures.us/ Most of the films seem to have been out in ;
release for a while. Then there is "THE LAST SUIT"
http://www.outsiderpictures.us/movie/the-last-suit/ ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5991974/?ref_=nv_sr_1 It's a pretty compelling
story about an elderly Argentine leaving home to make his way back to Poland.
https://zeitgeistfilms.com/ They have two documentaries that either just ;
came or will be coming out this month. "WHAT IS DEMOCRACY"
https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film/whatisdemocracy ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7708476/?ref_=nv_sr_1 "STUDIO 54" ;
https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film/studio54 ;
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5773986/?ref_=nv_sr_2 ;
