So is it 105 or 111 minutes? Either way it sounds very tight. There will also
be our necessary acknowleging of sponsors - Joel's comments - an intro from
Bill. I wonder about starting the intros and comments at 9:55 - usually the
audience is mostly there by then? And we would need to start any Q&A during
credits to accomplish anything at all. Kill the sound. And what if a cop shows
up?
Remember to keep your hands in sight. Abbott

“PEACE OFFICER” is 105 minutes. That’s 15 minutes at most between the end
of our film and the beginning of the next film in Cinema 3. We might be able to
get a little extra time by starting the discussion during the closing credit
sequence. Bill, how would you like to proceed under these circumstances?

Hey All,
On Monday, Sam and I will be heading to sunny, tropical Utah for the
Sundance Art House Convergence and won’t be to Waterville for the Saturday
screening of PEACE OFFICER. J-sun and Jak will staff the box office/concessions
on Saturday and we’ll be here on Sunday.
PEACE OFFICER has to be in cinema 3, I’m afraid; the film in C3 starts at
noon—earlier start times for the other venues—so there won’t be much time for a
discussion if we have a guest, but there is the lobby. I have a trailer for the
next CinEx screening, THE WORLD OF APU, but didn’t make it part of the PEACE
OFFICER playlist because of the time restraint.
Thanks!

Hi everyone
Bill:
Glad you feel you are set for “PEACE OFFICER.” I can understand why
police officers might be reluctant to commit to representing the police officer
perspective in a discussion about a film they haven’t yet seen. I don’t know if
this would be helpful, but perhaps inviting police officers to see the film
without making them commit to participating/leading the discussion. Once they
have seen the film they may be willing to offer comments and if they then
decide to identify themselves as police officers that certainly would be a
perspective that the audience should find quite valuable. If they are willing
to take a leadership role in the post-film discussion, I certainly would try to
promote that expert input as we do other guests.
Abbott:
I think a verbal “Prince Valiant” our-story-so-far introduction on Apu
would work fine. You more than anyone else in our group has great affection for
the Trilogy and that should come through quite clearly. I certainly plan to be
there for the Saturday screening and can help with the discussion as can anyone
else from the group who is there. We certainly have had free-form discussions
following films and they can be valuable just in the sharing of feelings about
a film.
David McLain confirmed that he will be showing up for the Q & A
following the film, but is not planning to be there when it begins on Sunday.
Looking forward to seeing many of you over the weekend on either day.

Julie and I will be up either tomorrow or Sunday, which ever looks less
scary. We’re all set for Peace Officer, Joel. Still looking to add a working
cop - tougher than I expected.

Hi Joel,
Perhaps Selah Tea Café or Jorgensen’s for a post film luncheon? I
am happy to reimburse you for our speaker’s lunch, too, of course!
I am still working on guests for Taxi and Dukhtar. Will keep you
posted when/if I get something lined up.
Hoping for some good attendance this weekend. We will have onscreen
slides for our sponsors and advertisers, but it would be wonderful if whoever
introduces the film mentions that SBS/Carbon Copy is the sponsor of BOUNCE. I
hope to make it to the Sunday screening, so perhaps I will see some of you
there.
Thanks!

Well, we are two days away from the screening of our first film
“BOUNCE!”. Are you excited? I am. I contacted David McLain a couple of weeks
ago. At that point he had not been summoned away to a work assignment and was
still planning to be with us. I think we have been doing a pretty good job in
promoting our series and, specifically, promoting his appearance this coming
Sunday. The CINEMA EXPLORATIONS FB page has posted a short video about his
sense of calling to do the work that he does. I will be contacting him for a
final check on his appearance—his plans and expectations. If you haven’t seen
it, I certainly would recommend it. We have ordered the bagels and will be
bringing those up on Saturday as usual.
Shannon: Typically, we have made arrangements for a meal with our
guest either at Buen Apetito or Grand Central Café, but Grand Central Café is
closed on Sundays and Buen Apetito doesn’t open on Sundays until 4:00 pm.
Obviously, an invitation for lunch (should it be accepted) would need to be for
another establishment. Do you have any suggestions?
Bill: Are you all set for the discussion/program around “PEACE
OFFICER” ? Are there going to be any guest contributors?
Abbott: How are things going in the preparation for a discussion on
“THE WORLD OF APU” ? There was a suggestion that a hand-out providing some
background on the trilogy and helping people to understand what had previously
transpired in Apu’s story might be helpful. Are you planning to do that?
Shannon: We have Kyle Stevens set for “HITCHCOCK/TRUFFAUT,” but my
recall is that we were still trying to find possible special guests to
contribute to our discussions for “JAFAR PANAHI’S TAXI” and “DUKHTAR
(DAUGHTER)”.
We have discussed having a couple of additional screenings after
our Saturday/Sunday morning film series in the spring. Shannon provided dates
of film events already on the schedule and those are below. I would suggest
that we could have a one-night screening of a film during the second week of
April (Tuesday, April 12th; Wednesday, April 13th; or Thursday, April 14th) and
have another one-night screening the first week of May (Tuesday, May 3rd;
Wednesday, May 4th; or Thursday, May 5th). I don’t know if it matters to the
theater which weekday evening we would take. Since we were not able to
integrate any current Foreign-language Oscar submissions into our schedule,
this would be a good opportunity to rectify that. Here is a link to a listing
of all the submissions with many having trailers and information about US
distribution (however, this information is not completely accurate. For
example, Romania’s “AFERIM” is distributed by Big World Pictures and Spain’s
“LOREAK (FLOWERS)” is distributed by Music Box Films. This can be quite fluid):

Here is an article predicting who will receive nominations from
those films that were selected for the Foreign-language Oscar shortlist. The
predictions don’t matter as they are likely to not be fully accurate. However,
it is likely that Ken would be interested in showing the nominees whichever
ones get nominated and those on the shortlist are still in play for getting a
nomination. We will know the nominees in a couple of weeks. Since “THEEB”
already showed during MIFF, we probably should pass on that.

This would also be a good opportunity to show “THE GOLDEN DREAM”
which we liked a lot when we screened it during the fall.
Does anyone have any suggestions—either from the list of
Foreign-language Oscar submissions or something else—for showing during the
spring.

Subject: [cinemaexp] Promo Materials at the cinema; dates for
spring evenings
Greetings, all! The CinEx posters, programs and all access passes
are available at Railroad Square Cinema for pick up and distribution. We will
be mailing a copy of the program to each of our members this week as well.
Stay tuned for the press release!
In terms of evening events in the spring, we currently have special
events on the following dates, so these would be out. We are also planning to
add at least 2 or 3 other events in April for Earth Day, Sexual Assault
Prevention Awareness Month, and a special screening with Colby’s Oak Institute,
so it will get even a bit more crowded. May is pretty wide open, though...
