Bob and everyone else:
Let me address the new titles.
Alice and I did see “ZAMA” while we were in Toronto. I liked it, but Alice
wasn’t quite as impressed. I suspect our audiences might find it a little
confusing and perhaps a little slow. However, we never really had it under
consideration because even though it has a US distributor there was no fall
2017 release date and it is a 2018 Best Foreign-language Oscar submission. Ken
has always been a bit reluctant to let us schedule those and since the US
release date has not been set and probably is dependent on how it does in the
Oscar competition that is an additional complication. We basically decided to
eliminate any of the Foreign-language Oscar submissions from our consideration
a few weeks back.
“KARL MARX CITY” is a 2016 documentary. It looks interesting and did receive
favorable critical responses per Metacritic. It was released in the US last
spring. It will be coming out on DVD/Blu-Ray on 12/5/17 per Amazon. It also is
or will be coming out on Netflix (presumably fairly soon?):

“CALIFORNIA TYPEWRITER” is another 2016 documentary. It looks
interesting—especially if one retains an affinity for using a typewriter. I
don’t know if that broadens or limits its appeal. This also had good critical
responses in Metacritic. It got its official theatrical release on 8/18/17
after a number of stops on the festival circuit. It will be coming out on
DVD/Blu-Ray and on iTunes on 11/21/17.

Joel,
I have been increasing interested in 1945 myself. Read this review that came up
in my research ... 1945 review link http://nycmovieguru.com/nov1st17.html .
Let's discuss this further tomorrow.
California Typewriter and Karl Marx CIty are docs that have come to my
awareness. Have you looked at either of these? Also was Zama in consideration
at some point?

Considering the cool turn to the weather, I certainly hope everybody’s power

I know I have been lobbying for “1945,” but I am on the mailing list for
Menemsha Films and they have been sending me promotional e-mail about the film.
This is the second time they have sent me this excerpted scene from “1945.” I
think it does a pretty good job of establishing the tone for how the town is
responding to the arrival of the two Jews. You may also want to read the Film
Comment online article focusing on “1945.”
https://www.filmcomment.com/blog/deep-focus-1945/ The only caveat I would make
about it is that it definitely needs to be shared with a [Spoiler Alert
Warning!]. I don’t think there’s a lot it holds back in describing what happens
in the film.
Anyway looking forward to seeing everybody tomorrow!

On a summer day in 1945, an Orthodox man and his grown son arrive in a small
village in Hungary while the villagers prepare for the wedding of the town
clerk's son. The townspeople – suspicious, remorseful, fearful, and cunning –
expect the worst and behave accordingly.
A superb ensemble cast, lustrous black and white cinematography, and
historically detailed art direction contribute to an eloquent drama that
reiterates Thomas Wolfe’s famed sentiment: you can’t go home again.
