Our power is back. Praise be! Six days without electricity is no fun, especially when you have to haul all the water you use. We are lucky to have a public spigot in Winthrop.

For some reason, I am put off by the look of "1945." Looks too cold. Plus, do we really need another movie about World War II? But I am certainly willing to read some of the reviews.

Considering the cool turn to the weather, I certainly hope everybody’s power and heat situation is back to normal. Alice and I were extremely fortunate, but lots of people had a pretty uncomfortable and frustrating week last week. I hope everybody is planning to be at tomorrow’s meeting at RRSQ at 10:00.

I know I have been lobbying for “1945,” but I am on the mailing list for Menemsha Films and they have been sending me promotional e-mail about the film. This is the second time they have sent me this excerpted scene from “1945.” I think it does a pretty good job of establishing the tone for how the town is responding to the arrival of the two Jews. You may also want to read the Film Comment online article focusing on “1945.” https://www.filmcomment.com/blog/deep-focus-1945/ The only caveat I would make about it is that it definitely needs to be shared with a *[Spoiler Alert Warning!]*. I don’t think there’s a lot it holds back in describing what happens in the film.

Anyway looking forward to seeing everybody tomorrow!

On a summer day in 1945, an Orthodox man and his grown son arrive in a small village in Hungary while the villagers prepare for the wedding of the town clerk's son. The townspeople – suspicious, remorseful, fearful, and cunning – expect the worst and behave accordingly.

A superb ensemble cast, lustrous black and white cinematography, and historically detailed art direction contribute to an eloquent drama that reiterates Thomas Wolfe’s famed sentiment: you can’t go home again.
