Working on this and I’m having a problem with the sound. I’ll let you know by
noon tomorrow.

I had previously sent out information on the documentary “STUDIO 54” from
Zeitgeist Films. I thought you might like to read this article about the film
that ran in the NY Times over the weekend. Interestingly, the print headline
for it—which is different than its online headline—“Studio 54, The Other
Magic Kingdom.”

Screeners, Group Screening, etc.
Dear Friends:
Let’s start with a reminder to those who were at our last meeting and a
notice to those not able to be there: Next Meeting is on Thursday, October
11th at 10:00 am (If we can do a group screening of a film, it may be helpful
if we could get together at 9:30 am if you need to leave by noon—Let me know).
Attached you will find notes that, hopefully, will help explain what went on
during our last meeting. Basically, people are working their way through all
of the possibilities that were put forth as a result of my survey of the
distributors that have been sources of films or at least possibilities over
the past few years. We currently have 52 films on my 2019 IMDb listing of
possibilities:
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls024847104/?pf_rd_m=A2FGELUUNOQJNL&pf_rd_p=4dc7ad1a-76a6-49eb-9acb-5d6959572df8&pf_rd_r=K1T280BGHF2FWBF03TDN&pf_rd_s=right-4&pf_rd_t=48201&pf_rd_i=watchlist&ref_=wt_otl_1

There will be a handful of films removed as indicated in the MEETING NOTE.
While lots of links have been provided in a series of e-mails that have been
sent over the last couple of weeks there are a some additional links for
films that I will provide here. The first film in the list is “THE SWAN”
which is from Iceland. It was one of several films that we could not fit into
our schedule for TIFF 2017. I discovered that it had US distribution in
August through an outfit I had not previously known called Synergetic
Distribution. It, therefore, earned its place as first on my 2019 CINEMA
EXPLORATIONS Possibilites List. Here is the link for “THE SWAN” with the
film’s trailer:
http://www.synergetic.film/videocase.html#cbpi=ajax/the-swan.html ;
<http://www.synergetic.film/videocase.html#cbpi=ajax/the-swan.html>
Our list includes ten films from FilmMovement. I am adding another film from
that same distributor that Alice and I saw while we were in Toronto last
month. This film was just added to the FilmMovement website over the last few
days. The film is called “THE THIRD WIFE.” Here is its webpage from the
FilmMovement website:
https://www.filmmovement.com/theatrical/film/the-third-wife ;
<https://www.filmmovement.com/theatrical/film/the-third-wife> and its IMDb
webpage is here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7692966/?ref_=nv_sr_1 ;
<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7692966/?ref_=nv_sr_1> The longest description
is probably its TIFF webpage: https://www.tiff.net/tiff/the-third-wife/ ;
<https://www.tiff.net/tiff/the-third-wife/>
Another film that will be added is one we saw in Toronto called “WORKING
WOMAN” from Israel. It tells the story of a woman who is subject to sexual
harassment at work. It apparently was very recently picked up by Zeitgiest
Films: https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film/workingwoman ;
<https://zeitgeistfilms.com/film/workingwoman> Its IMDb webpage is here:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8844204/?ref_=nv_sr_1 ;
<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8844204/?ref_=nv_sr_1> and the longest
description of the film along with a trailer is from TIFF:
https://www.tiff.net/tiff/working-woman/ ;
<https://www.tiff.net/tiff/working-woman/>
Serendipitously, I just noticed that Kino Lorber was distributing “A STAR IS
BORN” (1937) with Janet Gaynor and Frederic March. This is the first of four
films with this title that have been made. The new “A STAR IS BORN” (2018)
with Lady Gaga is the fifth time the film’s story has been brought to the
screen. The initial effort dates from 1932 and had the title “WHAT PRICE
HOLLYWOOD?” Clearly this film that is now over 80 years old qualifies as a
classic. It is likely to be a lot less grim than some of the other classics
we might be thinking about from Ingmar Bergman or elsewhere. However, Kino
Lorber is also hawking DVDs and Blu-Rays of the film to the home market. It
seems like the kind of film that Turner Classic Movies (TCM) would be showing
as the new version shows up in theaters. Here is Kino Lorber’s webpage for
the film: https://www.kinolorber.com/film/astarisborn#press ;
<https://www.kinolorber.com/film/astarisborn#press> and here is its IMDb
page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029606/?ref_=nv_sr_4 ;
<https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0029606/?ref_=nv_sr_4>
OK, that is probably enough for new additions to our list. As I mentioned in
the subject line we have screeners. Unfortunately, we have links for
streaming via Vimeo as opposed to DVDs. I know that some of you may loathe
watching films on your computer or some other type of device not really
designed for movie viewing, but I hope that you will make an effort to at
least watch a portion of some of the films on your own.
I am, furthermore, hopeful that we can set up a group screening in
association with our next meeting. I have two candidates for this. One is a
film for which I have advocated called “ICEMAN.” The other possibility is
“THE CHARMER.” I decided that “ICEMAN” may only be able to be appreciated by
seeing it on the big-screen. The film is a created backstory for a mummified
body found preserved in the Alps. The man died as a result of violent
injuries. The filmmakers decided to use an archaic language believed to have
been spoken by people in that area at that time—about 5300+ years ago—but
decided to not use any subtitles. The entire film unfolds visually. The exact
meaning of what is being said can only be inferred from context and
non-verbal cues. The main character experiences an horrific loss and, like a
western, shows him trying to avenge what has happened to his community and
his family. The mountain settings, the action, and the violence are key
aspects of the visual storytelling. “THE CHARMER” is a Danish movie about an
Iranian man who is an illegal immigrant and is looking to find someone to
marry to solidify his claim to avoid deportation. The film seems to have been
favorably received by film critics and won prizes at film festivals. It is
described as “an intense psychological drama” and appears to have its own
tale of revenge. Please let me know if you have a preference.
Alan, I know you may have some other issues to focus on this Monday, but it
would be helpful to know if you think you can use the links so that we can
see a film together as a group as soon as possible. Thanks.
See you on Thursday!
Joel

Subject: Possible Candidates for Film Series
Importance: High
Dear Mr. Wolkin:
I am the leader of a selection team for a filmgoer-curated film series run by
the Maine Film Center in Waterville, Maine, during the winter months each
year. We are currently just beginning our selection process for our winter
2019 program. Over the past several months we have received e-mails from you
about the availability of a number of titles that FilmMovement is
distributing and entertaining requests for bookings. Many of these were quite
intriguing to our team. We would, however, like to be able to view these
films before making any decisions to book specific films. We are hoping that
you can provide us with screeners to assist us in this process. Most of this
list was generated from your e-mails, but I have added some films from the
Coming Soon section of the FilmMovement website:
“The Sower”
“The Charmer”
“Iceman”
“Un Traductor”
“Rafiki”
“Styx”
“La Familia”
“Egon Schiele: Death and the Maiden”
“Frantz Fanon: Black Skin, White Mask”
“Antonio Lopez 1970: Sex, Fashion, & Disco”
It would be very helpful if you could send the screeners to this address:
CINEMA EXPLORATIONS Selection Team
℅ Railroad Square Cinema
17 Railroad Square
Waterville, Maine 04901
We can certainly correspond via e-mail, but if you were to need to contact me
more directly I can be reached at 207-622-9041. We look forward to the
opportunity to view your films. We have regularly booked FilmMovement titles
in our film series over the years and they have generally been quite
well-received by our audiences. Thank you in advance for aiding our process.
