Good evening Joel and all... I regret that attending the meeting tomorrow
will not be possible for me. I will follow along by email and look forward
to attending our next meeting.
I remain enthusiastic about "The Other Side of Hope". In spite of it's flat
tone which could be perceived as a weakness it has strength of character
and a feeling of hope for us as part of the human race.
Please do continue to explore the strengths of the Agnes Varda film. On
initial review it feels like the sort of story that could please our Cinex
audience.
Joel, thanks for the .doc Thematic Film Grid. Will explore it when I get
home tomorrow. Alas the device I am using this evening will not open this
file. :(

This will be a reminder for everyone who was there on Thursday. Our next

Abbott and Nancy, we hope that Nancy’s recovery has progressed well. This
is relatively short notice as we had quite a bit of difficulty in
scheduling a second meeting this coming week. We hope you will be able to
join us. We did, however, come to the conclusion that Thursday will be a
good day for our meetings this fall after this and plan to have our third
meeting on Thursday, October 19th.
I have developed a thematic grid for the films on my *CINEMA EXPLORATION

in seeing commonalities and unique characteristics for those films.
Hopefully, this will help us begin to rule-in or rule-out films for our
discussion and process. I have not addressed the Quebec films on the list
(#5-#10) in deference to Laurie who likely may be developing her own
process for assessing them. There are some older classic films in the
Quebec group, but aside from those we only have one classic film (“HEAT AND
DUST”) currently on our list.
The group enjoyed the screening “THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE,” but wanted to
evaluate it further knowing more about some of the other films that we have
under consideration. A handful of films were mentioned during our
discussion though we did not address most of the films on the list and no
additional films beyond the list were suggested. The films that on
first-look seemed intriguing beyond “THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE” were
narratives “KILLS ON WHEELS” and “ON THE BEACH AT NIGHT ALONE” as well as
documentaries “LIBERATION DAY,” “BOMBSHELL: THE HEDY LAMARR STORY,” “FACES
PLACES,” “THROUGH THE REPELLENT FENCE,” and “INDIVISIBLE.” These were the
ones I included in my notes and, hopefully, I didn’t miss any others that
may have been mentioned.
There was a very favorable review of “FACES PLACES” in the New York Times.

The Maine Jewish Film Festival is planning for Railroad Square Cinema to
function as a satellite venue on March 10th and 11th. It looks like the
easiest way to avoid stretching our audiences between CINEMA EXPLORATIONS
and MJFF would be for us to begin on 1/6-7/18 and have a bi-weekly schedule
that would include 1/20-21/18, 2/3-4/18, 2/17-18/18, 3/3-4/18 and finish on
3/17-18/18. If anyone has input about any conflicts on any of these dates,
please let me know.
