Sightings:
2 Gray Whales
2,000+ Common Dolphin
It was a gray morning, but with no wind still nice offshore. We had a full
boat (spring break) with lots of locals, but also visitors from New York
and Colorado.
One of our passengers spotted our first gray whale, just east of Gina.
This whale fluked each time he surfaced, then would dive for 5-7 minutes.
After spending some time with a small pod of dolphin, we spotted our second
adult gray whale just west of Gina - this whale exhibited more typical gray
whale behavior, snorkeling for a while and then fluking and making a deeper
dive.
We then proceeded toward Anacapa and found one of the largest megapods of
common dolphin I have ever seen - Captain Robert and I agreed that it was
at least 2,000! Really pleased the passengers.
That was it for the day - we ran east in the channel for a ways, then back
to port, with no further sightings.
