Subject: Purple Sea Urchins now Kelp Enemy #1

Dear Collegues,
Anyone who explores our underwater Channel Islands and local mainland Kelp
forests knows that Purple Urchin barrens are currently a primary obstacle to
all living critters who seek sanctuary and sustenance within those forests.
Please read this article on how a war is being waged against expanding
Purple Urchin barrens around the Palos Verdes Peninsula coastline of Los
Angeles County. Commercial Sea Urchin fishermen do not target the smaller
Purple Urchins, but rather only the larger Red Urchins. According to David
Kushner, Kelp expert within our CINP, this battle is bringing back Kelp
forests in PV waters where I used to fish as a kid! Cheers, Paul P.S. By
the way, Kelp Forests habitats are thriving where-ever otters thrive, but
not where Purple Sea Urchins are thriving.
