With passengers from Singapore and Vietnam, as well as out of staters from New
Mexico, Connecticut, Arizona and Texas we left the harbor with calm seas and
No sooner did we leave the breakwater when a Steller Sea lion and its pup
appeared. That was the start of a "stellar" day on the water. We observed:
2 Minke whales 7 Humpbacks2000+ Common dolphins100 Bottle nosed dolphins
Two pairs of Humpbacks were mother and calf. One of the mothers performed
doing tail lobs, showing flukes, spy hoping and frequent pec-slaps. It was
quite a show!
The grand finale was a spectacular entry into the painted cave.
Many thanks to Captain Luke for his care in approaching the whales and amazing
distance into the cave. He and his crew, Dave and Jackie, as well as my fellow
naturalist, Stan Kamin, were a joy to work with.
