I’ll admit—sometimes I’m afraid to watch the news. I’m saddened by the steady
wave of news reports about whales dying with trash in their stomach and
turtles battling plastic bags and straws in order to survive. Plastic
pollution is one of the most prolific and visible threats facing our ocean
today.
But, there is a beacon of ocean optimism.
I’m excited to tell you about a new piece of ocean-friendly legislation that
has been introduced in Congress.
Recently, the Break Free From Plastic Pollution Act was introduced by Senator
Udall (D-NM) and Congressman Lowenthal (D-CA). This promising piece of
legislation would put in place a sweeping set of policy measures to reduce
plastic waste and prevent it from entering our ocean.
Will you join us in telling your members of Congress to support the Break
Free From Plastic Pollution Act? We need ocean advocates, like YOU, to help
us put an end to the growing threat of plastic pollution in our ocean.
While personal commitments to go waste free are important, a problem on this
scale requires nationwide and global solutions. This bill would phase out the
most harmful contributors to plastic pollution, hold plastic makers
accountable for the waste they produce and incentivize recycling.
Each year an estimated 8 million metric tons of plastic waste enter our ocean
threatening marine life and coastal ecosystems. The United States is the
largest generator of plastic waste globally, which means we have a
responsibility to solve this problem. We need our Federal government to act
now to protect our ocean.
Will you help stem the tide of ocean plastics? Together we can take a
critical step forward in the fight against ocean plastic pollution.
Your members of Congress need to hear from YOU—to know that this piece of
legislation is important to their constituents. Please speak up and take
action today.
Our ocean and the animals who call it home are depending on us to take bold
action. We have the power to protect them from harmful, unnecessary impacts
of plastic pollution.
