Collegues,
Here are some 1904 original photos of a campout excursion to Santa Cruz Island
at Cueva Valdez Bay half way between the west end of the island and Pelican Bay
( Thank you Marla Daily and the SCI Foundation ). A taxidermist from Avalon
organized the excursion. Note in the photos his preserved creatures are all
species of local fish caught at the time in Channel Islands waters! Cheers, Paul

Catalinans Visit Santa Cruz Island in 1904
What Fun!
Recently a treasure trove of photographs came to light, consisting of more
than a dozen fantastic images of a large group of people camping at Cueva
Valdez, Santa Cruz Island in 1904. Using clues in the photos and a little
sleuthing through ISLAPEDIA, and voilà—we learn Santa Catalina Island
taxidermist,
C. B. Parker, organized this trip. Avalon's Captain Pard Mathewson
transported 25 people and all the gear and supplies aboard his sloop Avalon.
Catalina's resident photographer, Peter Victor Reyes, was a member of the
trip, and presumably took the photos.
The nine tents set up at Cueva Valdez are named (l-r):
Chiquita Camp; Early Risers; Parkers In; [?]; Old Hens Retreat; Islanders
Camp; Butt-In; The Four Orphans; and Dos Pescadores Solos.
September 23, 1904 [Santa Barbara Morning Press]:
“Catalina Party on Santa Cruz. Campers find Channel Islands far superior to
the more southern resort. A party of prominent people from Catalina are
making a three weeks' tour of the Channel Islands, and have established a
most complete camp at Quava [Cueva] Valdez bay on Santa Cruz Island, where
they have been for over a week. The party left Avalon on the 14th of
September in the gasoline sloop Avalon, which carried full camp equipment and
supplies for the trip besides all the members of the expedition. They sailed
immediately to Santa Cruz Island and established their camp there, from which
they make side-trips to other parts of the island and fishing excursions out
into the channel. Their camp is a most picturesque one, being composed of
nine tents placed on the beach under the protection of the overhanging
cliffs, and near where a fresh water spring bubbles out of the rocks. A large
tent in the center is reserved for pleasure-making and for a dining room.
They have employed an experienced cook, Mr. Pierce, who formerly worked in
that capacity at the Potter Hotel, and have all their meals served in the big
tent... The Avalon party consists of Charles Parker and wife, who organized
the party; Captain Mathewson and wife, Mrs. Pratt, Chris Ringson, George
Aull, Peter Reyes, Edward Edmondson, John Johnson, and the Misses Josephine
Foust, Emma Foust, Lena Kelly, Lena Nelson, Elizabeth Hudson, Cora Geruer and
others.”

"You got to hurry." A privy was set up across the canyon mouth from camp
Getting a teacup drink from the falls.
A side-trip picnic to Prisoners' Harbor with 22 at the table.
It rained during their camping trip, and items were hung to dry. According to
the San Francisco Call of September 25, 1904, 6.30 inches fell in Santa
Barbara, in "the heaviest September downpour ever known in California.
Santa Catalina Island taxidermist, Charles Browning Parker organized the trip
to Santa Cruz Island in 1904.
Emily Parker took over her husband's taxidermy business after her husband's
death in 1924.
C. B. Parker (1866-1924) and his wife, Emily Parker née Linscow
(1870-1946), are buried in Avalon Cemetery.
