• 750 - 1,000 common dolphins
• 2 blue whales
About 60 passengers boarded the Condo Express this beautiful morning in
Santa Barbara. Clear skies and little wind in the harbor started the trip
off well as we headed out towards East Santa Cruz Island. After about an
hour we ran into a spectacular pod of 750-1000 common dolphin. Captain
Dave got us right into the heart of it and you could see dolphins on all
sides for a distance. After letting the passengers get their fill, we
headed out about another hour, close to the end of Santa Cruz. The winds
picked up a bit making it hard to see any spouts. Before too long though,
we saw our first great big blue whale! He kept diving and shortly after we
found a second blue. We hung around the area as long as we could and got to
watch these whales come back up a few times. Unfortunately we ran out of
time and had to head back to harbor.
Amazing day - my certification trip and my first blue whale sighting!
