Hello Naturalists,
* Many small-medium size pods of Common dolphins
* One huge pod of Common dolphins, estimated about 1,200
* No whales
The day was absolutely beautiful, and the ocean was calm! Although we didn’t
encounter any whales, soon after leaving harbor we came across a small pod of
Common dolphins. And this was a sign of many more pods to come. We saw many
adult-calf pairs.The dolphins in the huge pod displayed an array of behaviors,
some not commonly seen. They would leap high up (~ 3 body lengths) out of the
water; some would breach; others would beat their beaks a couple of times on
the water surface; some were bow-riding; others mating; many (if not all) were
feeding. All this to everyone’s delight!
We had visitors from Sweden, Germany (quite a few families), Switzerland, and
Seattle. Some of the locals were from Santa Barbara, L.A., San Fernando Valley,
and other.
Captain Tasha Colton & Co-Captain John commanded the vessel. Devin supplied
nourishment in the Galley, and Naturalists Rosie Romo and Maria Ornelas roamed
the decks answering questions and talking with passengers.
