It was a somber day in the harbor, but we had a good trip, beautiful weather
and great visibility!
Sightings:
2 humpbacks
Several thousand common dolphin
Shortly after leaving harbor we turned west and found a large pod of dolphin
about a mile off Hope Ranch with many calves and some mating activity.
We then headed further offshore, passing through several smaller pods of
dolphin and finding another large pod off the north coast of Santa Cruz.
We found a pair of humpbacks in a feeding frenzy of common dolphin, sea lions,
and birds near the shipping lanes off the west end of Santa Cruz. They were
cooperatively feeding, with some good flukes-we stayed with them for almost an
hour.
Relatively small group of passengers today (there were several cancellations)
with Austria, Germany, France and the Ukraine represented, as well as Ohio,
Arizona, Illinois, and honeymooners from Minnesota.
Thanks to Captain Dave, Devon and Austin for a great trip under difficult
circumstances.
With me today we’re Anthony Scardino, Fran Arner-Costello, and Debbie Fedaleo
as PID
Always grateful to be on the water,
Del Hanson
