You can check your owl sighting against these burrowing owl photos in my
online gallery if you want, Bart. Hope you are well and I'll see you soon on
board. Burrowing owls are tremendously interesting animals.

I hope this works. First time trying.
I was out at Scorpion on SCI last Thursday leading a hike up toward Cavern
Point when we flushed a medium sized owl near the side of the trail. It flew
low to the ground for about 10 yards, stopped to look at us which allowed us
to see that it was definitely an owl, and then disappeared into a lemonade
berry bush. I’m not very good on owls, so when I got back to the boat at the
end of the day I asked Laurie, one of the fine naturalists that work on the
IP boats, and she suggested that it might be a burrowing owl, a native of the
islands but not often seen. We checked our bird books, and the description
fit. Also that it was staying close to the ground and that it was moving
around in the day which they do. Nice siting!
It was a beautiful day out there, and we saw mega pods of common dolphins
both on the way out and back. Some of us also saw several humpbacks from the
island carrying on on the surface about a mile offshore.
