Ahoy Collegues,
Both trips saw whales today. Captain Taylor and his crew delighted the early
boat passenger by finding 5 Grays and 1 Humpback. Sightings were a couple miles
out > off of Hope Ranch. Three of the Grays were at the same sighting time as
the Humpback, however, the Humpback was feeding in a different locale than the
northerly migrating Grays ( thus two different Whale Alert sightings). A squid
boat was active near the Humpback, so maybe it was fishing the same squids?
With a full boat on the latter trip Captain Taylor spotted a Gray before we got
to the Sea Lions on the SB Harbor far buoy! We followed this juvenile to 1000
Steps less than a half mile off Shoreline Park, and witnesses this whale stop
its migration, dive repeatedly, and meander around for about a half hour, while
also seeing 3 other Grays to do the same there. Total: 4 Grays, two of which
looked like juveniles.
A delightful day with Andy Lanes shadowing trip #1. Also, one passenger looks
to be a future CINC applicant the next go-around! Cheers, Paul
