Saturday, April 14, 2018. 1:30P Island Packers: Island Explorer out of Ventura
Weather: Calm wind and seas, sunny skies
Crew: Captain Lee, Joel, Lisa and volunteer Sam
Naturalist: Cliff Rodrigues
Trainee now certified: Virginia Norris
Passengers were mainly local folks and many on a whale watching adventure for
the first time or first time in many years.
A sea lion greeted us in the harbor as we departed.
1 fin whale, about 3 sightings
1000's of common dolphins, a couple of times to the great delight of the
passengers
Humpbacks galore. The crew thought 10 - 20. All around and under our boat. They
kept us captive - literally. See the attached picture taken by Cliff (no zoom
lens). Our captain said this fellow just kept smiling at us - for several
minutes. Then he'd go under the boat to the other side and rise up, repeating a
number of times as the grateful and awe struck passengers scurried from side to
side!!
1 humpback mother and calf.
