Hi Friends,
Friday, February 8th:
1 juvenile Gray Whale1, 000 Common Dolphin spread out and bow riding2,000
Western Gulls on Anacapa Island, who all took off in a great whooping swirl
upon our arrival at the Visitor's Center, landed slowly, and settled in for our
stay.75 Brown Pelicans25 Sea Lions3 Fence Lizards5 Small sparrow type birds,
sorry I can not identify them, but the small birds are often our endemics
All 14 passengers went on my hike. The Wild Cucumber was first and now the
Coreopsis are just beginning to bloom, as well as a few Morning Glorys and Gum
Weed. The field near the Lighthouse has been planted and is well maintained
with large shrubs of Malva Rose, like the ones that used to be by the Visitor's
Center. The Mala Flora Iceplant we removed is returning to the north-west
field --- it is the one with the beautiful red flowers that was prevalent ten
years ago. Because of the extended drought, much of Anacapa Island has other
types of Iceplant and Cheese Weed.
Still, everything was green!
