Villa Grove Fire Clean Up Begins
Posted: July 26, 2004
It was a tragic weekend for the community of Villa Grove after a massive fire
raged through the historic Shangri-La Hotel. The hotel had been serving as a
home for disabled veterans for over five years. The efforts of more than a
dozen fire departments kept the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings, but
they could not save the hotel. According to the local police department there
have been no fatalities, but one man remains hospitalized. As far as the hotel,
most of the windows are boarded up and today there is still a burnt smell in
the air. Just down the street from the destruction the hotel owner Russell
Vaught reflected on the burned rubble with a surprising sense of optimism. The
building was more than a home to nearly twenty disabled veterans Vaught says it
was also their family. He says the facility followed strict fire codes. John
Rulison lived directly above the room where officials say the fire may have
started. He says community support for the victims of the Shangri-La fire has
been tremendous. Many of the residents are staying at the Veterans Affairs
Facility in Danville or with near-by relatives. The fire marshal was in Villa
Grove investigating the fire again this afternoon, but says the cause is still
unclear.
