BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- A commercial plane crashed Tuesday morning in a wooded area
just south of Belleville, but all four people on board survived, officials
said.

One person reportedly suffered head trauma and was transported from the scene
by a medical helicopter. A helicopter reporter over the scene said the person
with head injuries appeared to be wearing a pilot's uniform.

The helicopter reporter also commented that the pilot had managed to find a
clear space to land the jet, in an area dotted with houses and barns, then
managed to bring the jet down in one piece.

The St. Clair County Sheriff's Department received a report of the crash around
6:45 a.m., said Deputy Janet Bertelsman.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Tony Molinaro said the plane took off
from St. Louis Downtown Airport in Cahokia. The flight was en route to North
Platte, Nebraska.

An air-traffic controller says the pilot experienced problems shortly after
takeoff and crashed about four miles southeast of the airport. He had no
information on what might have caused the crash.

Volunteer firefighters, ambulances and rescue helicopters from St. Louis and
Belleville rushed to the scene, which Bertelsman said was "hard to get to
because of the woods and the landscape." Firefighters quickly covered the jet
with foam.

A long skid mark could be seen across the field where the jet had landed and
burst into flames before skidding to a stop.

One person from the crash was in fair condition at Saint Louis University
Hospital. The conditions of the three others were not available.
