The fire appears to have been caused by a burning car between two warehouses. "The men get worn down," said deputy fire commissioner Salvador Marquez. "They're soaking wet and cold, but they continue and little coffee goes a long way to give us a little boost." The fire could have also claimed several houses surrounding the warehouses, a fact that was in the front of the residents' minds. "If it wasn't for them putting out the fire," said Brittany Aparacio (pictured, right), "our house could have been burned down." The firefighters fought a blaze that reached temperatures in the thousands of degrees, another fact residents appreciated. "They're very brave, you know," said Melva Aparacio. "This is a very dangerous job for them." The firefighters also got help battling the blaze from fire academy cadets, which might inspire some young residents to follow them, Wright further reported. "If you're brave enough you could do it to save people," said one neighborhood boy. Copyright 2003 by NBC5.com. All rights reserved.
