(MOUNT VERNON) 08/18 -- LAST WEEK IN RANDOLPH COUNTY, A DEPUTY ASSISTING IN A HIGH SPEED CHASE FATALLY INJURED AN INNOCENT WOMAN. ON MONDAY, A HIGH SPEED CHASE THROUGHOUT JEFFERSON COUNTY ALLEGEDLY REACHED SPEEDS OF 140 M.P.H., BEFORE MT. VERNON AUTHORITIES MADE THEIR ARREST NEAR REND LAKE COLLEGE. SEVERAL SOUTHERN ILLINOIS POLICE DEPARTMENTS HAVE BEEN REVIEWING THEIR PERSUIT POLICIES IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS. JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF ROGER MULCH SAYS SUCH POLICIES ARE REVIEWED AND DISCUSSED WEEKLY. MULCH SAYS SHERRIFFS DEPUTIES HAVE A LIMITED PERSUIT POLICY THAT ONLY ALLOWS FOR A HIGH SPEED CHASE IN INSTANCES WHERE A FORCIBLE FELONY HAS BEEN COMMITTED OR WHERE A FORCIBLE FELONY IS IMMINENT. HE SAYS THOUGH, THAT THE DECISION TO STOP A PERSUIT IS ULTIMATELY UP TO THE SHIFT COMMANDER AND THE OFFICER. IN THE INSTANCE OF A NON-VIOLENT OFFENDER, MULCH SAYS IF THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE AND THE LICENSE WERE CAPTURED BY A SQUAD CAR'S CAMERA, HE WOULD LIKELY ORDER HIS OFFICERS TO BACK OFF AND LET THE STATES ATTORNEYS OFFICE TAKE IT FROM THERE. MULCH ALSO TELLS US THE COUNTY IS EQUIPPED WITH STOP STICKS. IN FACT, HE SAYS THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN USED ON MONDAY WHEN HIS DEPUTIES ASSISTED MT. VERNON AUTHORITIES IN THE CHASE. HOWEVER, DEPUTIES WERE UNABLE TO GET AHEAD OF THE FLEEING VEHICLE. MULCH TELLS US THAT THERE IS ANOTHER POLICY AT THE DEPARTMENT: A SIGN PLACED IN ALL SQUAD CARS THAT READS, ?AS YOU WOULD NOT WANT YOUR LOVED ONES PLACED IN HARM'S WAY, YOU WILL NOT PLACE OTHERS LOVED ONES IN NEEDLESS JEOPARDY".
