NBC5's Kim Vatis (seen blown in the wind as she reported live Monday morning, left) reported that firefighters have been largely successful in their battle against brush fires that broke out in three Kankakee County towns Sunday afternoon. In southeastern Pembroke, the fire was first reported about 2 p.m. Sunday. At least five houses were damaged, and about 50 cars at a junkyard were burned. "The wind is not letting up and it is not making it easier for firefighters," Vatis said Monday morning. The flames were reportedly under control or extinguished in Pembroke and Momence by 6:30 a.m. Monday. Firefighters were still working on the fire in St. Anne, which had burned "more than 300 acres of brush," according to NBC5, by Monday morning. "It is real difficult. Hopefully, today won't be another day like it was last night," said Pembroke firefighter John Johnson (pictured, right). "All our men are very, very stress(ed) and tired."
