Fire does $120,000 damage to barn, contents

Firefighters from 11 companies responded to blaze that
destroyed a large barn Tuesday afternoon in northern Caroline County.
GOLDSBORO - A fire at 23973 Bridgetown Road caused $120,000
worth of damage to a barn and its contents Tuesday morning.
State fire marshals said the 3-alarm fire took 51
firefighters 2 hours to control.
The fire was discovered by a passerby around 10:46 a.m.,
officials said, at a barn owned by Edward Banks. Officials said the fire began
in the barn's interior, but they are still investigating the fire's cause.
The barn and a 1999 Dodge cattle truck were destroyed by the
fire, officials said, but other vehicles and livestock were removed by
neighbors.
Banks was not at home at the time of the fire and there were
no reported injuries, officials said.
Harold Benton, Crumpton Volunteer Fire Company's chief
engineer, was on his way to Denton when he saw smoke coming from the barn. He
said when he got to the barn it was fully engulfed and he dialed 911.
