Barn fire started by boys playing with lighters, say police

Four Effingham juvenile boys, aged 11, 12, 13 and 14, were taken into custody
by the Effingham Police Department Saturday after starting a barn fire at the
intersection of Fourth Street and Kagay Avenue.

The barn, owned by Mark Bussman, had hay and straw in it, and when the juvenile
passersby stopped in the barn and started playing with lighters, the barn
caught on fire, said Effingham Police Chief Mike Schutzbach.

The four juveniles confessed to lighting the fire and were released to their
parents, Schutzbach said.

Information about the case will be forwarded to the Effingham County State's
Attorney's office, and it will be the state's attorney's decision whether or
not to press charges. Effingham County State's Attorney Ed Deters was not in
the office this morning to comment on whether he plans to press charges against
the boys.

The Effingham Fire Department responded to the fire at 4:04 p.m. Saturday, and
the roof was already fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, said
Fire Chief Nick Althoff. The barn was a total loss.

No surrounding buildings were affected by the fire.

Firefighters were on the scene for two hours to control the fire.
