The CHS-L list has been inactive for some time. In fact, I have thought several
times about just deleting all the subscribers and ending the list. Nostalgia
has kept me from that action.
However, today, I received messages from Charlie Southern, Beverly Cunningham,
Wilks Robinson, and Jennifer Pierce asking to be subscribed to the list. I also
received a message from Gerry Harper asking to be unsubscribed.
All of these good people are currently subscribed to the list. There is a total
of 109 subscribers. I am not sure about the Southern children, if they are
included are not.
I first began the list at the suggestion of one of the Shelton Business
Machines employees. They supplied internet access in the Caruthersville/Kennett
area. The list was hosted on their domain, sheltonbbs.com. When they were sold
to a company located in Poplar Bluff, the list was moved to that domain. Later,
the list moved to several other domains until it finally ended up at
While I lived in Caruthersville, I posted general Caruthersville news with
special attention to deaths and other landmark events for faculty and former
faculty. After I moved to Glasgow (15 years ago), I often begged for someone
still in the 'ville to post that same sort of information. I knew that I and
others longed to read it. With the exception of Keith Currie, who posted Tiger
football updates, there were very few postings. Finally, Keith also stopped his
comprehensive game reports. Since then, there has been almost no posting.
I suspect that many of the 109 subscribers have changed their E-mails and would
I don't know what prompted the activity today. I do know that a phishing
message was posted to the list and forwarded to me without being posted. It was
the one about being stranded in some foreign country and needing money to pay
the hotel bill, etc. That is a fake, but people do fall for it.
I would be delighted if the list were to continue. I like to know what is going
on in Caruthersville in the general news line. Also, as my first mailing list,
it has nostalgia value to me. I now manage about a dozen lists for various
organizations and for branches of my family (Westhues & Flaspohler).
So, if the desire is there and if someone is willing to post that local news, I
am willing to keep up the management and hosting. My web page (listed in my sig
block) will tell anyone more than you want to know about my life today up here
in Glasgow. My wife and I still miss Caruthersville. We came there intending to
stay two or three years and ended up spending 27 years. Margaret Schaeffer
warned me to not get bootheel mud between my toes or I would not be able to
leave. I guess I should have kept my shoes on a little more. :)
Go Tigers! J. Y.
