1.1 FEATURED PRODUCT

BitDefender announced the launch of its newest generation of desktop
security products, namely version 10. The three released products benefit
from a host of new technologies and from a new licensing and renewal model.
As usual, trial version kits and product documentation are freely available
on the BitDefender web site.

1.2 EVENT OF THE MONTH

BitDefender proudly presents the new and thoroughly improved BitDefender
website. New security information, new features, lots of products and
special offers all await beyond this link:

2. VIRUS NEWS.

The month's top ten viruses by number of infected files is once again
strangely bereft of actual viruses, with trojans and worms taking the lead.

Apparently, there is also a marked upswing in the use of malicious dialers;
Trojan.Dialer.DQ is the first dialer to make the monthly top ten threats
this year.

3. ASSORTED BADNESS

A JavaScript program which may allow malicious web sites to bypass some
commercial popup blockers (such as Norton Internet Security and possibly
Internet Explorer Toolbar) is seeing heavy use in the wild.

4. QUOTE OF THE MONTH

The quote of the month comes not from a person but from an corporation,
namely from Amazon, which has posted a price quote for the upcoming
Microsoft operating system, which is due out sometime next year. The quote
goes as follows: "Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate DVD-Rom - $399". Make of
it what you will.

5. NOTABLE VULNERABILITIES

A Microsoft security patch has itself been the origin of a new
vulnerability, which was duly exploited. The patch of the patch arrived a
bit late for some. The whole story is covered here:

http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid14_gci12120
16,00.html

The moral to this story, if any, is that even security patches need testing,
before release as well as in deployment.
