Hi everyone, I've had a couple of questions this past week on finding
information on new music and playlist selections. This is a good time to run
down the resources we make available to you at CFBX to make getting new music
into your show easier.
First and foremost, you should be getting your list of new playlist adds in
your mailbox every Friday morning. That's the newest of the new material being
added to the playlist. Each listing has the name of the artist, the album name,
the record label and a description of what it sounds like. This should make it
easy to figure out if you want to feature the artist in your show. The list is
duplicated in the on air binder and on the main page for our google group. Go
to groups.google.com and log in there to see the group, and all the past
playlist adds. Using this, you should be able to see the listings for all the
playlist albums and their descriptions, from 1-360.
On air binder is also available for anyone coming into the station physically.
The descriptions list is in the binder (that's the red binder up in the side
room upstairs), along with artist bios, which will give you lots of good
information about an artist. Obviously, you can use the CDs in the playlist
room to listen to material before you go on the air. If you are coming into the
station to do your show live and need to listen to something before you go on
the air, make sure you show up early so you have the necessary time to listen
to your music.
If you can't come into the station or are programming from home, there's a lot
of great ways to listen to music from your home computer. If you search for the
name of the artist in your favourite search engine, or the artist name plus the
name of the album, you should get some links to the artist's webpages and
social media, which should also have ways to listen to their music. Most will
also have loads of artist bio info too you can use in your show. Most smaller
artists maintain a bandcamp page too, so searching for the artist name plus
bandcamp will bring that up for you. For example, a search of "sluice bandcamp"
brings up [ https://sluicehfx.bandcamp.com/, ;| https://sluicehfx.bandcamp.com/, ;
] Sluice being a new addition to our playlist. There you can listen to their
music and learn more about the band.
Lastly, remember that everything in our library is archived online in our
Online Library. Click on the link on the bottom right hand column on [
http://www.thex.ca/ ;| www.thex.ca ] to get to the documents. You can use the
same techniques to find music online to listen to, and to find it in our
library if you come in to do your show live. I've been updating the lists
lately, plus the themaitc lists (in the tab at the top of the library documents
page), and I'll have more info to you soon about this.
Remember to keep your show varied and to avoid repeating artists, whether
within an individual show, or from week to week. Variety is one of the keys to
keeping your show interesting to your audience. Keep searching for new material
each week for your show.
