Hi folks, I've pasted our latest off-air volunteering guide below. I'll be
tracking down individual volunteers for off air work in the next couple of
weeks. You can track who is doing what on the laminated board in the main
lobby. Thanks!

Hi folks, now that most of our new volunteers are in training, it's time to
talk about off-air volunteering hours. Remember, every volunteer, old and new,
needs to put in at least two hours of off-air volunteer work (any work at the
station outside if your on air shift) each month. There's a lot that needs to
be done. And, we reward you for every two hours you do. It's also a great way
to meet other volunteers. The more you get involved, the more you will get out
of your volunteer experience at CFBX. Remember to log your hours on the log in
the main lobby and for every two hours you put in, your name will be put into a
draw at the end of each month for a chance to win free CDs!
I need help in a number of areas, the two most pressing are the library and in
production:
1.
Library work. Most new volunteers will start in the library, shelf-reading.
Shelf-reading is making sure all of the albums in the library are in order.
This gets you used to how the library is set up in terms of organization, plus
gives you a good opportunity to see what's in our library. It also helps all
volunteers at the station be able to find the music they need. If something is
misfiled, then no one will be able to find the album or be able to play it on
the air. If you are a new volunteer and are unsure what you want to do off-air
yet, then I'll get you working on shelf-reading.
2.
Databasing – We also need help getting the information in our library into our
database so programmers can more easily find the music in the library. You'll
be entering information into the database, first to get us caught up on the
various sections, then to keep the database up to date with the latest adds to
the library. I need about 4-5 people to work on databasing. It's a good
activity if you are a good typist, or if you like organizing music.
3.
Typing – Another activity we have on going to make library access easier for
everyone is the online listings (you can find them by clicking the Library
Online link on our webpage's front page). Eventually, the entire library will
be published on-line, but the information needs to be typed up from handwritten
pages. If you're a fast typer, then this should be a good activity for you.
You'll need a Google account to edit the online database. I need a couple of
dedicated typists, plus a few others to double check the records online for
spelling and other details.
4.
Production – I need a few dedicated volunteers to work on our interviews and
turn them into hour long specials. You'll be taking pre-recorded interviews and
combining them with music from the musician interviewed and producing on air
programming. This takes a bit of extra training to learn how to use Audacity,
our audio production software. I need about 1-2 people helping out here. I'll
be announcing production training in the coming weeks, so if you are
interested, sign up when the announcement comes.
Other tasks that need to be done:
*
Interviewing: If you like interviewing musicians, then just sign up when the
interview requests come out. Just send me an email saying you are interested
and I'll set things up between you and the musician. I'll also give you a crash
course on interviewing skills.
*
Cleaning: The station tends to get messy as people use it, so it's always a
good idea to clean up a bit. You can sweep up the floor, tidy up the kitchen,
or haul recycling away on a regular basis.
*
Committee work: CFBX has a number of committees running at any given time. On
my end, I run the programming committee, which monitors on-air quality. I also
run the volunteer committe, which sets up social events, volunteer get
togethers and comes up with ideas to recruit more volunteers. The board will
need help with committees too, so watch for spots as they open up.
*
Fill-ins: Any work you do outside of your main show will count as extra
volunteer hours. Filling in for someone else's show is another way to get your
off-air hours in, plus it gives you more experience in the booth, especially in
programming other forms of music. Watch for the fill in requests and volunteer
to fill in.
*
Writing. I'm need regular bloggers for our website. We cover material related
to the station, from music reviews, concert reviews, volunteer profiles and
more. If you have an idea for a regular column or are interesting in writing,
come see me ASAP.
*
Labellers. This is an ongoing project to better track what's being played in
the library, and every album that's been in our library more than 10 years is
going to need a label put onto it and marked. I need a 3 or 4 people to be on
the labelling crew.
*
Social media crew: I could use a few people who are good with Instagram to help
get content up on the platform. If you want to take some pictures or video
around the station and can work witn Instagram, contact me and I'll give you
access to the account.
*
Reception: Lastly, reception is something anyone can do. You'll be sitting at
the front desk and greeting people as they come through the door, or answer
phones. If you have homework to do, you can do that in the time in-between
greeting.
