Additional CEE/GEE Seminar "An iterative approach to understanding species' ranges"<https://www.ucl.ac.uk/gee/gee-events-publication/seminar-abstracts/2013-05-07-merrow-abstract> Speaker: Cory Merow<http://www.eeb.uconn.edu/people/cmerow/home/Home.html> (University of Connecticut) Date & Time: Tuesday, 7 May at 4pm (note the earlier start time) Venue: Gavin de Beer LT, Anatomy Building (map<http://crf.casa.ucl.ac.uk/screenRoute.aspx?s=1178&d=19&w=False>) Host: David Redding (Ext 54229) Abstract: Ecologists rely on knowledge of species' ranges to understand macroecological patterns, biodiversity, niches, behavior, or simply where to find the organism they're looking for. Often, range maps are treated as tools for subsequent analysis, however the quality and construction of these maps profoundly effects any emergent biological predictions. In this talk, I discuss a spectrum of methods for building and interpreting range maps - ranging from exploratory correlations to process-based predictions - to emphasize the linkage between biological questions, available data and appropriate methods. My goal is to define a framework for ecologists to structure data collection and make modeling decisions congruent with the biological insights they seek. ------------------------------------ GEE/CEE Seminar "All about sex in fish" Speaker: Paulino Martinez<http://www.acuigen.es/es/acuigen/member/20> (University of Santiago de Compostela) Date & Time: Wednesday, 8 May at 5pm Venue: AV Hill LT, Medical Sciences Building (map<http://crf.casa.ucl.ac.uk/screenRoute.aspx?s=1178&d=115&w=False>) Host: Judith Mank (Ext 54228) Abstract: Sex is a ubiquitous feature in the living world and, although a general consensus exists on its relevance for obtaining new genetic combinations for adaption, the presence of different sexes introduces new evolutionary scenarios for live. Sex determination is an especial developmental pathway, where an undifferentiated gonad is driven towards an ovary or a testis at a specific time of development mostly depending on the genetic constitution of the individual. Our view of sex determination and its evolution has been very influenced by the studies on Drosophila, mammals and birds, where a stable genetic mechanism reflected as a chromosome heteromorphism associated to a particular model of inheritance is present. Fish have demonstrated a very different pattern of sex evolution. Different genes and even environmental variants play a role and changes in sex determination can occur in a very short period of evolutionary time. ------------------------------------ Department for Neuroscience, Physiology & Pharmacology Seminar "Computational studies of ABC transporters" Speaker: Peter Tieleman<http://moose.bio.ucalgary.ca/index.php?page=Peter_Tieleman> (University of Calgary) Date & Time: Wednesday, 8 May at 4pm Venue: H.O.Schild Lecture Theatre, G46 Medical Sciences Building (map<http://crf.casa.ucl.ac.uk/screenRoute.aspx?s=1178&d=116&w=False>) Host: Paola Vergani All audience members are cordially invited to join the speaker and the host in the UCL Housman Room (UCL North Cloisters) for informal conversation over a drink of choice/nibbles. This is provided by the NPP seminar budget. ------------------------------------ Race for Life cake sale Wednesday, 8 May from 10am Ladies in the IHA (Institute of Healthy Ageing, GEE) are taking part in a Race for Life on the 1st of June, a 5km walk, jog or run, to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
