As part of the Wallace100 celebrations taking part in 2013, the Natural History
Museum will be hosting a monthly lecture series. These lectures are part of the
Museum's participation in Wallace100, an international programme of projects
and events celebrating the centenary of Wallace's death on 7 November 2013. At
these monthly events, leading biologists and historians will discuss different
aspects of Wallace's life and work. The series also highlights the significance
of the Museum as a focal point for Wallace collections and studies.

The Natural History Museum 5 September 16:30 - 17:30, Flett Events Theatre

Dr George Beccaloni, The Natural History Museum - 'Alfred Russel Wallace and
natural selection: the real story'

What compelled Wallace to search for the mechanism that drives the evolution of
life on earth? Find out in this free lecture.

Discover the little known story of the years of work and exploration that led
Wallace to the Malay Archipelago and the moment, in a state of tropical fever,
when the idea of natural selection suddenly came to him.

The talk is presented by entomologist and evolutionary biologist Dr George
Beccaloni. This is the 8th in our series of Wallace100 lectures.

Dr Beccaloni will chart the development of Wallace's ideas about evolution,
from his early life in Neath, to his expedition to the Amazon and his epic
journey around the Malay Archipelago, where he finally discovered evolution by
natural selection.

About Dr George Beccaloni
George Beccaloni is the curator of the Museum's collection of cockroaches and
related insects and the Director of the Wallace Correspondence Project. He
founded the Wallace Memorial Fund in 1999 and in 2002 he helped the Museum

insect specimens. George co-edited the book Natural Selection and Beyond: The
Intellectual Legacy of Alfred Russel Wallace and was the historical consultant
for the recent BBC series Bill Bailey's Jungle Hero.
