Brian I understand has been built at least 3-6 times in New Zealand, about
half in the North Island and half in the South Island? The donor car is a
2.5L Turbo WRX.

single and had the cash etc, in a rented single garage that was a 10 minute
drive from home - and it was awful. The garage had minimal space with no
room for a work bench so I was forever back and forth. I had a month of
leave owing and worked almost all of that for over 8 hours a day plus most

Depending on your automotive history and car/fabrication experience,
range of tools and equipment to hand and the nature of the kit your build

engine upgrade, new wiring and new fibreglass) and it took me 6 months
using the garage under my then flat as life got in the way.
I am doing a fairly simple, no real fabrication required build at the
moment (1983 AE86 Toyota Trueno rebuild) and it is taking a few months even
though I am getting serious shed time in. The other massive challenge right
now is parts supply - items from overseas are taking 4-8 weeks to arrive
which destroys critical path.
Cashflow is also an issue - I have spent $2500 in the past 6 weeks on
miscellaneous bits and pieces - despite the car being about 98% complete
mechanically and I spent 2 years buying in what I figured I needed. Turns
out I needed a bunch of parts I wasn't expecting to have to replace!
Don't underestimate the space needed for parts and equipment storage
either, or needed to refurbish parts etc.
So my strong recommendation is to build at home. Also - If you can't use
the garage to build it, where will it live when finished? I often pop into
the shed for just a few minutes to check out something and a commute makes
that more of an evolution. There is also the issue of tool duplication.
Depending on your house layout you can build a 20m2 carport without a
permit etc right now - I have one that is enclosed on 3 sides with a pvc
patio curtain on the front. Or build a shed as others have suggested. Any
money spent renting a space is money not going into the build - and if it
drags on it can get expensive. Matt's suggestion of rolling the Project
into the corner Is a good one.
I am in Stokes Valley - more than happy for you to eyeball my set up to
help give you a feel for things to consider.
The idea of a father and son build is brilliant - my daughters are
unfortunately not interested in cars to that degree but I reckon you are
absolutely doing the right thing, and I wish you luck for your build. It is
possible to build a vehicle in a short period in a rented space - but there
is a reason I only did it once and I have been messing with cars for the
past 27 years.

one half of our double garage during the week, and the whole of it on
weekends. So Friday night/Saturday morning I moved the wife’s car out of
the garage into the driveway, And Sunday night I moved it back again.
She almost never had to start her work day by walking out to the drive
in the cold/rain. And I got to work on my kit on weekends. Everybody was
happy!

Hi all,
Just joined the NZ Constructor Club, as a newbie constructor with a kit
on the way from the USA, and the donor car bought, to build with my 15 year
old son.
At this point it looks like true work likely to start in December 2020,
so plenty of time to learn from others.
Perhaps predictably, the family garage has just been declared off
limits for the kit car work by my lovely wife!
So, I'm on the look out for a secure, lockable garage in the Wellington
region, ideally close to Khandallah/Johnsonville, for ~6-9 month rental.
Does anyone have anything available, or know of someone who might be
able to offer such a facility?
