I’m always grateful for the intensive fire fighting training navy gave me -
which not only makes me hyper aware of the risk but also not prone to panic
with fire, and the confidence of knowing how to extinguish a fire effectively.
I will never forget being 18 and the exercise of facing a diesel fuel pit fire
that was several square metres in area with only a 9 litre foam extinguisher
and basic safety gear, and being amazed that you could get it from raging
inferno with flames a couple of metres high to out within 15-20 seconds with
the right technique - so much that one extinguisher could get it out twice and
almost 3 times.
Be wary of oil soaked cotton rags in rubbish spontaneously combusting. And
never, ever leave without giving hot work at least 30 minutes post last
application of heat to cool and check for hot spots.
Phil.
