with Tufts University and am working on a community science project with
Washington State University to monitor the migratory monarch butterfly
population throughout California this spring, the Western Monarch Mystery
Challenge. We are entering the third year of this project, and with just under
250,000 adults recorded at overwintering sites this year, are hoping for a
great season of monarch sightings! Participation is simple - we just ask that
if you see a monarch butterfly anytime between Valentine's Day (2/14) and Earth
Day (4/22), please take a picture and either (1) send it to <a

with information on the date and location where the butterfly was observed, (2)
submit your observation to iNaturalist, or (3) upload it to the Western Monarch
