I have this morning written to both Alex Nix and Stephen Kelly. Thank you Ted
for bringing up the true nature of this 'foundation' work through your
correspondence with Alex Nix.

Subject: July 11th work at night
Hi all,
A heads up regarding the late night early morning work Spencers are doing
July 11/12th, 18/19th, 25/26th.
I have just been informed by Alex Nix that the 'work' starting Saturday night
July 11th being done by Spencers involves 'piling'. This was not mentioned in
the letter, only foundation work etc. This I have been told requires the
power to be shut off as they will be connecting power lines.
I have been told 'piling' will commence at 3am Sunday. Apparently only one
pile will be at this time pout in...
I know now why piling was not mentioned in the 'newsletter' we received.
'Piling is a type of deep foundation, used to transfer the load to a deeper
level than is possible with a traditional shallow foundation. Vertical
columns of concrete, steel or wood, or a combination, are driven deep into
the ground to give extra support'

from 3.10 mins onwards and you will hear this and how loud it is and the
repetitive nature. I have been told it is set to run for an hour... but I am
guessing it will run for as long as it takes.
Railway piling work is a very noisy operation and creates a lot of vibration.
This happen three years ago in Preston... some comments... "3 and a half
hours the other week my house was shaking and vibrating , pictures on the
walls rattling and furniture almost moving , certainly can not be good for
the structure of the houses that's for sure , the bright lights and machinery
are awful but that piling noise is unbearable"

I have asked Mr Nix if any assessment been done by Spencers on possible
damage to foundations of our homes on Great Eastern Street as a result of
'piling' so close to our homes. I also asked why the work being carried out
did not detail 'piling' until I asked Mr Nix to ask specifically what
Spencers were doing in the night/morning.
Asking a friend whose brother is an engineer what his knowledge base is on
piling as he worked for an engineering form doing railway work he said it
will be heard up to 1 km away and is loud, very loud.
He also said foundation damage is possible unless a detailed and in depth
structural annalysis has been done on the surrounding area.
So it will be very noisy and possible foundation damage. Apparently there is
nothing we can do about this...
Mr Nix mentioned that no one else had raised queries or objections but then
'piling' was not mentioned in the 'newsletter'...
Maybe if more queried the necessity of 'piling' at the crack of dawn is
really a fact or just a convenience and why no consultation or survey done on
possible damage to our homes foundations and we then informed checks on that
possibility done.

Unfortunately two members of my household have to work Sunday and have to
start work early. I have no idea how being awoken at 3am will impact on them.
Any ideas?
