<CT> icon windows - wide toolbars

The toolbars on icon windows have become a bit wide IMHO - any idea on
what one could do here? Selectively disabling the various sections
perhaps?
BTW: Is the status of the toolbar (on/off) being saved for each window
or for explorer and icon windows or for all (icon and explorer) windows
or not at all?
