I'm curious as well. I could breathe some life into a few 286's for some
computer liberate friends.

I'm still very curious though, about Windes 2000 long filename handling
capability -can anyone tell me if this "clone" manages to use LFNs like
Win95 (on 286 CPUs!??!) Because of list member's descriptions of Windes
2000 (crappy, cartoonish), is it possible to think that it consists of
original code!?! If it was simply a re-use of Win95 code, I would expect it
to look very similar or exactly like Win95. So I hope to spark interest
that it may be capable to finally apply LFN to Calmira in the same way.

Another factor I'm really interested in is if it is able to run without
booting off Win95 type DOS. Win95 does not run off DOS systems 7.00 or
earlier. If so, then LFNs are hopefully not directly in conflict with DOS
versions or their respective boot files (io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com.)

I'd love to try Windes 2000 out anyway, but I leery to buy the latest
version online "WindesME"; Windes 2000 is not available anymore through
their website. There is no demo or shareware version that I can find. Can
anyone tell me how to get a copy?

FYI, per Gaute Kvalnes of 386 World website,
http://www.halspastill.com/386/windes2k.shtml, Windes 2000 has a
"work-around" in running other Windows apps: "Windes 2000 can also run MS
Windows programs, but as far as I can see, it does so by launching an
existing Windows installation." If this is true, why bother running Windes
2000 if you still need Windows(95?) to run true Win Apps!??! That's like
running Windows from dosshell, a waste of RAM.

Thanks All.. -Bill

Agreed; it's a horrible program. If you want an alternate DOS-based GUI,
have a look at SEAL or Qube - or even GEM.
