What kind of case are we talking about?

AT/ATX?

Socket 7 processors are still used for industrial purposes...
If you search on PICMG, you can get a "SBC" built to that specification
and a passive backplane that will fit an AT case... I just got one to
refurbish my old case. 

When you are ready for your next machine you can just rip out the CPU
card and install the new one.
