I purchased it and am downloading it. It'll probably take awhile. How
will I know once it's downloaded and it's started?

Did you already buy the simulator? I’m asking because the answer to your
question depends on how far you’ve managed to go. If you already bought,
downloaded, and are trying to play FSX now, the answer is basically to wait.
FSX takes a few minutes to start up, it’s a very graphically intense
program.
If you haven’t bought FSX yet, then you need to do that. I recommend using
the Steam web site to have an easier time of it.

Welcome to the list. I can take a stab at answering some of these
questions.
To begin with, the abbreviation is FSX, not SFX, which generally stands
for
sound effects. *smiles* I just thought you might want to be aware.
First off, yes, a USB mic will work very nicely for IYP. If it has good
noise cancelation you should be set. I’m using one at the moment without
any
problems, though I also tend to use a pair of headphones for privacy if
nothing else.
Second, FSX is available on Steam, among other places. I bought my copy
there, and it’s a fairly large download, but worth getting as you don’t
have
to mess with physical DVDs and so forth. Steam is a bit tricky to
navigate
with any screen reader, but it is doable. That may honestly be the
hardest
part of this whole process.
Third, NVDA works very well with FSX. IYP itself is mostly voice-driven,
so
you won’t have to worry too much about that. NVDA is actually the best
screen reader for FSX I’ve seen, as it can actually explore the menu
bar,
something most other programs I’ve tried have trouble with.
