I’m not John, but I did buy Pro ATC/X shortly before I put flight simming on
hold for a while. The flight planner is pretty neat, as it can add waypoints to
let you fly SIDS/Stars, even with the default GPS. The one downside I found was
that the recorded voices weren’t nearly accurate on things like ATC
phraseology. That bothered me a lot, because it’s one of the things I look for
in a realistic ATC program.
Still, the flight planner is nice, and I guess it is worth a look for that. I
don’t think you can click menu options outside of the sim though, as far as I
know.

the manual, and noticed a few things which might make this app stand
out from the ATC app crowd.
1. Even in a changelog as recent as a month ago, tweaks are always
being made to how ProATC gives you descent information--as in, when to
start the descent. Users point out that one of its strengths is ATC
giving reliable approach information, without having to study charts.
This is my pet peeve with all of the ATC addons currently, mainly that
all of them suck at it.
2. ProATC has a built-in flight planner that will actually take into
account the current weather at your departure/destination airports as
generated by ActiveSky, default weather or a few other weather apps.
You create the flightplan, but you won't be able to load it into FSX
until you get clearance. After ATC gives you clearance is when the
route is actually generated and it can then be loaded into FSX. It can
also use Navigraph data as well, a very compelling reason to buy a
subscription and import SimBrief plans into ProATC.
3. Background Chatter that isn't insanely loud like RC4 and can be added to.
I have a few questions for John, though, if he's still around on this
list as someone said a month ago. Is it possible to read the in-flight
menu with NVDA object nav? If not, I know the basics... tune to freq,
and press 1 for taxi/takeoff clearance, etc.
Here's another question though. ProATC allows you to actually tune to
a given frequency at an airport by clicking buttons in the ProATC
window, I think. So instead of having to tell IYP to tune to it, you
can just click ground, departure, ATIS, etc or Clearance Delivery,
etc. I'm not sure how, or if, it handles non-towered airports.
John, or anyone else--if there's anyone else who uses ProATC, what are
the do's and don'ts for usage with IYP? I'm sure IYP can be in either
Live or RC4 ATC modes. There's no demo, so while I'm pretty sure the
interface is doable, I'd like some answers.
