I just don't get why Iyp didn't slow the plane down enough, maybe it just
didn't know there was trees at the end of the runway

This sounds like you were possibly not being given a localizer and glide
slope approach. Did IYP claim to have captured one or the other? If you
didn’t have both, then its instrument approach process wouldn’t work
properly, and you should have asked for a visual approach.
