[bvipilots] Direct GPS navigation, or high Altitude Airways?

Hi All
Is there an advantage to using either of these?
Also, I've noticed that when plotting a route in flight planner using high
altitude airways, the waypoints can consist of intersections and VOR
stations.
Is it necessary to do anything when the next waypoint is a VOR, or will the
aircraft magically go on its merry way.
