According to the manual:
"VirtualBox also fully supports the popular and open VMDK container
format that is used by many other virtualization products, in
particular, by VMware."

It goes on to say that "full" support was enabled in version 2.1, but it
has had "initial" support since version 1.4.

I've used VirtualBox and had good success with it so far, but I've never
tried the VMDK.
