Hello Andrew,
We're thrilled to be able to share the news we've long been waiting for - the
Government has launched its consultation on whether to create new Marine
Conservation Zones in the seas around England.
Last week, the Environment Secretary Michael Gove set out proposals to create
41 new Marine Conservation Zones - a type of protected area at sea. The public
now has the opportunity to comment on these proposals and we know from past
consultations that the public's support really does make a difference to the
Government's final decision.
We need your help to turn these plans into real protection for our seas.
In order to truly protect the stunning variety of habitats and wildlife found
in our seas, it is vital that all 41 of the proposed sites are given
protection. With this public consultation we have a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to secure real protection for our marine wildlife – but it’s not
going to be easy. This will be a short consultation, only six weeks, and there
will be pressure from others to weaken these proposals, perhaps even to exclude
some sites from designation altogether. Marine wildlife can’t speak up for
itself, which is where you come in.
It is vital that each and every one of us that loves the sea responds to the
consultation. We've launched a new campaign - Wave of Support - to make it easy
to respond and show the Government how much support there is for these new
Marine Conservation Zones. You can help by adding your voice to our Wave of
Support, which will generate a response to the consultation and call for all 41
sites to gain protection.
